How the heck does the incessant, exceedingly irritating Seminole "War Whoop" and accompanying Tomahawk Chop not get the same attention that the Washington Redskins do for being embarrassingly bigoted? Or have I just missed it?
No, I do not have cable or dish and cannot watch my BSU Broncos at Colorado State..

Florida State Can Keep Its Seminoles
By ROBERT ANDREW POWELL
Published: August 24, 2005
There was never any doubt where the Seminole Tribe of Florida stood on Florida State University's nickname. The tribe helped university boosters create the costume for the Chief Osceola mascot, approving the face paint, flaming spear and Appaloosa horse that have no connection to Seminole history.
Yesterday, the National Collegiate Athletic Association agreed with the 3,100-member tribe and the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, which had also endorsed the nickname. The N.C.A.A. removed Florida State from the list of universities banned from using what it called "hostile and abusive" mascots and nicknames during postseason play.
"The N.C.A.A. executive committee continues to believe the stereotyping of Native Americans is wrong," Bernard Franklin, the association's senior vice president for governance and membership, said in a statement. "However, in its review of the particular circumstances regarding Florida State, the staff review committee noted the unique relationship between the university and the Seminole Tribe of Florida as a significant factor."

(2,547 posts)Hope to be done with the roof and back home sometime late Sunday. Hotel is nice... but they had the UF/Ga game on when we checked in... knew better to ask about FSU with all the orange and blue we had to swim through to get to our rooms.
That plus the fact Georgia was up in the first quarter.. thought it best not to poke the bear.

(10,362 posts)The mascot is incredibly cool. He rides into the stadium in full war paint and plants a burning spear.
It's always been my favorite college football intro. I can see why the Seminole tribe likes it.

(8,224 posts)My daughter just graduated from FSU, and the local Seminole tribe provided the color guard for graduation. They were Seminoles and Viet Nam war vets as I recall it. They do approve of the mascot, and all the rest.
