Rush Sez: You can't boycott me alone - you need to boycott Clear Channel to be effective....

Well, if you read between the lines, that's what he's saying:

Let's make up a company, ABC Widget Company. And let's say that ABC Widget Company says, "We are no longer going to appear on the Rush Limbaugh Show." Well, ABC Widget Company isn't on the Rush Limbaugh Show. What happens is, advertising agencies order advertising buys on a series of local stations from market to market to market. A controversy like this erupts. They put out a notice to the stations, "By the way, for the time being we don't want our commercials run when Limbaugh is on." But they are not canceling their advertising on the station. They're just saying they don't want it running on my program during the local affiliate's commercial time, not ours.

is that Clear Channel, even if they are the radio version of Faux News, is in the business of making money. If they can't sell ads on one of their biggest shows then what do they need the show for? If his show is not a revenue generator they'll simply look for a show to replace his with.

Then Rush is "retired", so to speak.

A 3-hour loser.
That's a lot of time in the radio broadcasting world. Long enough for listeners to switch channels and never come back.

That happened here when they took a popular duo off of the morning drive time slot off of one of the local stations. Another local station snapped them up, lickety-split, and everyone just changed their channels to listen to them, and never went back to their old channel during the rest of the day.

Shit happens.

times of the day or on certain programs - such as Rush's. They station will lose money in the long run if advertisments run at other times - because the advertisers will not be paying as much. So, it definitely will hurt Limbaugh for advertisers to move from HIS program. He is either bluffing or just plain doesn't know what he is talking about.

miscalculate by continuing to run their fat mouths, taking it one more step too far, and being forced back into reality and back down to earth by the masses. People like Rush just don't believe it can happen to them, they think they're smarter, they're too big to fail, and in their minds, they're above the law and rules that apply to everyone else. He believes that his supporters will always come to his rescue. Thankfully however, I think Social Media has changed the dynamic of how fast we can find something out and how forcefully we can all respond and take action. Right Komen? I've always believed, that we the people still have the power, we just need to stand together and use it.......and when we do, we usually win the battles for what is right.

Instead of paying a syndication fee for the show, Limbaugh kept a percentage of the ads. So these ads were *not* ads on local stations. They were national and tied only to the Limbaugh show.

If that has not changed, then he is lying his off again. If it has, then why are the stations carrying his show?

Oh, that's right. Limbaugh got a $250M, 10yr contract. He gets paid the same whether his show is carried on 1000 stations or 1. His employer is going to make damn sure he gets on a lot of stations for their quarter billion dollar investment.

I forget the book where I read this and think it was actually something David Brock had put out. But a few decades ago, these ultra-conservative talk show folks pretty much gave away their show for free in order to get their foothold into the radio market. They figured they could use advertising to pay the talk show host instead of syndication fees from the Radio Stations. Radio Stations under budget cuts would switch to these types of programs since it cost them very little money to run them.

Isn't Clear Channel owned by Bain Capital? So therefore if we extrapolate Rush's idea, wouldn't we effectively need to boycott Bain Capital to boycott Clear Channel to boycott Limbaugh? It's the Inception rule of boycotting.

I think there were companies like Bare Escentuals who had bulk advertising thru Clear Channel and really didn't know that because of it they were advertising on the Rush show. It's not like they can hire someone to listen to all CC shows and stations to ensure they are only broadcast on certain ones. But I do think that advertisers can have some say such as certain times and certain styles of shows. The person from BE said that they would be reviewing their contract and requesting that no ads run during his show (Bare Escentuals is women's makeup so obvious they don't want to be on an anti-women show).

Ultimately we won't know how this turned out until a month from now. But a few DUers who have the bravery to listen to that show have said they have noticed an increase on PSAs on the Rush show.

The saying goes 'The Customer is always right' and I highly doubt that Clear Channel is going to piss off 40+ customers and force them to have ads run during the Rush Limbaugh show.
