(10,942 posts)to Democrats across the country. Teabaggers will take the close races as assurance that their views are acceptable to voters, which will prove to be toxic for the republican party candidates across the country in 2014.
BTW, President Obama need to get the health care implementation fuck up solved fast. I think the President coming to Virginia was a negative for Democrats, given circumstances his visit didn't help Democrats and fired up teabaggers. If things don't change, Democratic candidates across the country would be better off not to invite the President to speak at their rallies unless they are in deep blue states of districts. If health care implementation gets cleaned up by the end of November and people across the country see the benefits, then having the President come in September through Election Day in 2014 will be a good decision for most Democratic candidates.

(31,849 posts)That's my take on it.
As long as the tea-party is around, the House is in play for 2014.
If the VA election had been a blow out, establishment republicans could have told the tea-party to sit down and shut up. By losing by less than 10, with a libertarian candidate pulling votes away from cooch, the tea-party can/will argue the election had nothing to do with them ... it was that damned libertarian guy.

We have just begun the fight.

I worked for Terry M and supported him with my checkbook. But the fact is that he didn't kick anyone's ass. He is going to end up with less than 48 percent of the vote and a victory margin of less than 2 percent. Compare that to McDonnell's 17 percent win over Creigh Deeds or Tim Kaine's 5 plus percent win over Kilgore. Compare it to Northam's Lt. Gov. 10 percent win over certifiably nutjob Jackson for Lt. Gov. Or Christie's 20 plus point win over Buono in NJ.
We survived. And I'll take it. But I refuse to pretend that this some bellweather moment. We have to do better.

(42,768 posts)Maybe spin is what we need to do, but a win of less than 2 points is not "very respectable" particularly when the repub nominee was as bad as Cooch.
And when you win with less than 48 percent of the vote, I'm not sure you can claim to have won a referendum on anything much.
Sorry to seem like Debbie Downer, but I've lived in Virginia my entire life and we got very very lucky today.
