We've been remarking over and over about how mild and snowless this winter has been. Now we have the official word on just where the winter of 2011-2012 will rank in history. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has announced that this was fourth warmest meteorological winter on record across the contiguous United States and the warmest since 1999-2000. (Note: The meteorological winter is December, January and February combined)

Only the winters of 1991-1992, 1998-1999, 1999-2000 were warmer. All of this is based on records dating back to 1890s.

New Mexico was the only state that had winter temperatures below the 20th century average.

12. We had some snow in NE PA.

We only had one storm that dropped what I'd call significant snow and that was in October. Other than that we've had nuisance snow. The local ski areas had to make snow to survive. It was 63 degrees here this afternoon. The other half and I were actually able to sit out on the front porch for a while.

The coyotes are out tonight, the owls were active and my brother spotted a river otter this afternoon...

The Canada Geese have been very active lately, too...

8. Canadian Geese are back and saw two Robins today, a sure sign of spring.

4. It was 60 in Minneapolis yesterday

back into the 40s for today and the next couple days. But, 50s by the weekend and it is not impossible that we'll see 70 by the end of next week. The average temp this time of year is in the high 30s.

5. We didn't have a winter here in Dallas, Tx. I turned on my a/c a few days ago.

The bugs will be horrendous this summer, I guess. And I hope this doesn't mean we're going to have a scorcher summer like we had last summer.....months of triple digit heat that even those who love the heat could hardly bear. Even my dogs got melancholy & didn't want to go outside.

Makes me want to move north.

11. I don't know. I don't live there. I see on news weather in other places,

but I forget who got snow and who didn't. I just know that we didn't.

We got an extreme cold snap the year before, though. Lost power for several days, calf-deep snow which is unusual for here. Followed by the hottest summer I've ever experienced. Utility bills were horrendous. Power outages from the heat were everywhere. People died from the heat. Rolling scheduled power outages were ultimately done, to preserve power for all. Water shortage and strict water use limits were instituted (we have them anyway in the hottest parts of regular summers). It was hell.

I love the snow, though. That's one reason I moved here from the Gulf (besides the good economy). Coming from the Gulf, I grew up never experiencing it, just seeing it in movies. Well, it snowed twice when I was a kid, but it didn't stay on the ground.

But no snow this winter here in Big D.

Rain seems to be coming in regularly.
