In light of new food stamp decrease, let's all do our best to contribute to food banks and similar vehicles, NOW and for long as the punishment continues.
Thanks, DU.

(23,303 posts)My Boy Scout troop conducted a door-to-door canned-food drive for our local pantry--2600 cans donated!
(bad news from the pantry director: because of the demand for the food, that will all be GONE before Thanksgiving! We DEFINITELY need to help, folks!)

(17,574 posts)They generally get more "bang for the buck" with purchasing than we do at the supermarket.
But help any way you can.
That would actually be easier for me, as well. Now that I think about it, it's probably much more practical for the food banks. They have a lot more experience knowing what is needed than I would.
Thanks for the tip!

(1,782 posts)Donate dried beans.
In my experience, these are the best nutrition for the money. They have very short ingredient lists (typically just beans), a sign that they don't contain a lot of questionable stuff. They keep pretty well. And you can get organic ones. These are the reasons I donate beans to food banks, the same reasons I buy them to cook for my kids and myself.

(793 posts)Volunteering works as well.
I have been in the Newcastle-Auburn Ca area for a year, and work at the food bank, with other seniors and walk a few dogs at the pound, as well.
It works for others and, for me, I have things to do almost every day.

(8,492 posts)There was an article in our local paper last week saying the shelves were almost bare at our main food pantry.
I meant to pick some stuff up over the weekend and...forgot.
This time, I'm adding 'Extra Food' to my list, because my aging brain is dumb, sometimes.
Edit: Further up thread there is a tip to donate cash. Probably a better idea and more practical. I honestly never thought of donating cash.

(17,574 posts)Whenever I need to run to the grocery store for whatnot, I also buy a bag of beans or rice or a box of pasta. Put it in the mesh bag, and I have me a stash to bring to the food shelf with minimal fuss.

(9,314 posts)The Boy Scouts are having a drive and will pick up goods this Saturday. I give every time I get a notice, but I have bought extra food, and really good stuff, to donate this time. I intend to try to keep helping those I can help, but you know it is a crying shame there are those politicians allowing the Food Stamp program to be compromised. There is no low too low for them....

(63,912 posts)they were soliciting outside the building for foodstuffs brought by voters. I didn't know about it but I prefer to give cash anyway. Hopefully, I'll get a call or some mail. It's going to be my holiday giving this year.

(3,370 posts)We just used the food pantry as clients last week for the first time in our lives. It was about half-stocked. That was the day the cuts went into effect. She said they expect it to be a difficult month there.

(53,661 posts)My apartment managers have clothing and food drives several times a year, for handicapped centers, and the food bank network.
In my area, the state and federal agencies supply 85% of the cost of our food bank network and the rest is donations and volunteers. People also bring in food and plants from their gardens.
The network also delivers food to many cities in our area, and the warehouse is on a large property owned by the state. Many people from churches volunteer their time at the food bank itself, which also gives out emergency food until a person is signed up for whatever their needs may be.
There are very few private meals offered anywhere as there are in rural areas and many folks from all over the world who have emigrated who get into services of all kinds. They give information for many kinds of help, ESL, health care, utility and rent assistance, various kinds of transporation, school, social services, classes, too many for me to list.
I am a client and although there is a lot I cannot eat, it ends 'food insecurity.' The atmosphere is very good and it is well run.
This is a very blue area with something for all of us from car charging spaces in parking lots at stores and buildings, bike paths, buses, senior and youth services, more parks of all kinds being funded all the time, new schools being built and others refurbished, fire and emergency services, police substations and community outreach.
We vote on everything detail, and not afraid of being taxed. I argued with GOPers in the past their belief renters do not pay property taxes so they should not be able to vote. Their ignorance is staggering, as property taxes are not waived in the cost of rent!
It is the most vibrant and diverse place I have ever lived. It is disability and handicapped oriented as a matter of our laws, the way streets, sidewalks, and all of that is set up.
We are union, we believe in public works, we are Democrats, and we love each other. This is what city living is meant to be.

But of course, it needs to be done.

(131,140 posts)they'd know that we the people individually could NEVER provide ALL the help needed, not possible logistically or fiscally. But nevermind, they/'re not interested.
