Inside Out | Occupy Oakland is a participatory art project that uses documentary portraits in public space to reclaim our city, express the reaf faces of Occupy, promote peaceful protest, and demand attention on local and global levels. The larger-than-life black and white portraits of Oakland Occupiers will live on the facades and city walls, revealing stories of Occupiers from all walks of life.
They must reach 100% of the $8,000 goal by Saturday afternoon March 12 in order to receive any funding. If they are even $1 short of that goal, they do not receive ANY of the money raised.
Forty-four 3’x5’ portraits will be placed all over Oakland, 10 of which are already up. In addition, they are installing multiple portraits over 25’ high, covering entire facades of buildings (each large portrait costs about $300 to print). On top of printing costs, there will be costs for ingredients to make many gallons of wheat paste, purchasing of rollers/buckets/brushes/squeegees, scaffolding rentals, printing flyers and media, and more. They are documenting the entire project so that it can shared with the world. They are producing a
documentary short, and also contributing footage to a feature documentary created by The Inside Out Project. All of these costs are incurred to strengthen and support the voices of the Oakland Occupier, as well as Occupiers around the world.
