by Joan McCarter
This is an interesting twist in the whole "keep your health insurance plan" skirmish, especially for insurance companies whining about how it just can't be done. About 300,000 cancellation notices have been sent by Florida Blue to customers who would have to switch out of their existing plans to ones that meet Obamacare standards. But after President Obama's announcement yesterday of an administrative fix. Then this happened.
According to the state's insurance commissioner, the insurance company is holding off on the cancellations. It should be noted as well that these cancellations did not mean people were going with or went without coverage. They were being shifted over into Affordable Care Act-compliant (that is, richer and, in some cases, more expensive plans).
Those who've received cancellation notices "will get new ones offering them the option to remain on their existing plan through 2014 if they choose." Which is pretty much what America's Health Insurance Plans' (AHIP) president and CEO Karen Ignagni, said was an impossible thing to do. Not so impossible after all, apparently.

It was all a BS lie (http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023948905), and now they've been called on it. Still, this isn't likely to stop some Dems from handwringing instead of calling out the media and insurance companies on their BS.
More Dems like Bernie Sanders, please.

The reason the insurance industry tried to spin this as a problem is because they knew they were exposed.

(2,083 posts)I find that to be pretty condescending to assume they were so brain dead to not know about the health exchanges that have been advertised and talked about for years.
Either the law means what it says or it doesn't. When it comes time to pick up the can, they'll just kick it again for another reason.
Right now they are valuing the perfect over the good.

(116,464 posts)They're able to exploit anti-Obamacare and anti-Obama sentiments to get people to declare they love bullshit private insurance that doesn't cover much. These predators have found a bunch of allies who are lauding the virtues of private insurance for a selective group.

(177 posts)from challenging rate increases. McCarty may not negotiate rates for the benefit of consumers as pasted by GOP legislation....so I'm sure the insurers are happy to renew the crap they've been selling.

(13,570 posts)in his statements in 09 and that is just the truth. He has to own that. He did not lie by any means, but he also should have been clearer. So he has a fine line to walk here. And you see that Bernie basically agreed that he did what he had to do politically and said he should have been more nuanced in his stump speeches. But then Bernie PIVOTS to the narrative about this being JUNK insurance. Bernie is GREAT.
Now what we need to do is talk about "JUNK PLANS" and. as the grassroots. call out the insurance industry on this. Obama has done said it too, but just isn't being real forceful on it. Other Dems and the grassroots need to step up and do that because Obama does have to be the President of everyone including those in that individual market who are getting screwed over by the insurance companies.

(49 posts)insurance policies. The IRS penalty was and is not a penalty at all but makes a great club for the RW to use against the Democrats and to stir up the RW anti tax base.
What SHOULD have been in the ACA is:
1. An opt out option, as in I do not want to have medical insurance.
2. Eliminate the law that makes Hospital ER's treat those without insurance.
This would have a two fold effect. It would put the responsibility for health care on the individual and hospitals and the tax payers having to pay for those without insurance.
You get sick or injured and don't have insurance or the CASH to pay for treatment, too bad so sad YOU should have gotten Medical Insurance gee I hope you at least pre paid for your funeral and burial expenses, those cost allot too.
These RW a$$hats want to live in a Ayn Rand World, give it too em and see how long they can go Gault.

(116,464 posts)people screaming to keep their shitty insurance plans would have switched to the exchanges to pay for a public option? It would still cost more than the junk policies they want to keep.
