So what is the message of this cartoon? el_bryanto Nov 2013 #1
Maybe it means ANY church that preaches bigotry instead of a specific one. hobbit709 Nov 2013 #2

There are churches that are actively inclusive, which expend energy toward not being bigoted toward others. The bigoted churches hate to admit that truth.

Hey I answered a question - now let me ask you one. Given your long history of irritation with Pope-Positive posts and your feeling that they belong in the religion forum, do you think this this post also belongs in the religion forum?

I live in Utah where the predominate religion routinely expresses their bigotry openly and loudly but not very eloquently.

7. My contention Bryant is that when folks post about the Pope in GD it is fitting to discuss him

in terms of politics, current events and secular activism he takes part in. It is NOT fitting for folks to post 'I love the Pope' and expect the discussion in GD to be devoid of political content. Folks who want to discuss the Pope in GD but who also want to hound those who don't play Pope Public Relations games are posting in the wrong place. If they want to say 'he embraces gay people' when the fact is that he is an active opponent of LGBT rights and has a long raft of horrific hate speech to his credit should do that in religious forums if they do not wish to hear the truth of the matter.
This OP is about politically active churches, I don't care what you call your club, if you do politics, it is a political organization, see Prop 8. Waving about symbols and bits of dogma does not mean you get to discuss political matters as if they were religious matters.
Since this OP is about political churches, and it is being discussed politically, it's fine. Especially considering there have been dozens of 'We love a bigot' posts in GD that expect others to pretend the object of adoration is not a bigot.

I gave you a very complete answer, to which you make vague put downs.
GD is for discussion of many subjects, religion is an excluded subject in GD, therefore if a person posts about the Pope or Pat Robertson or any religious leader in GD, the discussion sought should be political, not religious. If it was intended to be a religious discussion they are welcome to have it in a religious group on DU. For them to post such subjects then demand they be discussed in terms of dogmatic law and not political reality, when they get offended at being shown facts and quotes from the Pope, they are in the wrong place.
I've been to the Vatican 4 times, met two Popes. Want to talk about religion in a universe that is strictly religious, I'm your guy. But I will not treat a political figure as if he was not political inside of a Democratic political forum because some folks get touchy about politics.
Churches do political actions, Bryant. They are not free from criticism because they say 'Goddy God' before they slander their gay neighbors or excuse racism. Sorry if that bugs you.

"I really like this pope compared to previous pope because he said this about poverty." A political issue.

Then you or someone else says "But he's a despicable bigot, because he's also said this about gay people. Nobody should say anything positive about this pope because saying anything positive about the pope is to endorse his homophobia."

And then it devolves into an argument, not about what the Pope said or what the OP was, but about whether or not it's acceptable to praise the Pope.

Frankly, if people want to praise racists and homophobes for driving a car that's their own choice, but I don't see how that means others are required to pretend that Francis did not seek his fame and fortune using horrific anti gay language, so awful that the President of Argentina called it 'Medieval and suggestive of the Inquisition'. People post 'this Pope embraces gay marriage' which is a flat out lie. I will always, always counter a lie told that will harm my own family, you can count on that.

The comic in the OP is about a church that has on it's billboard an anti gay message. It was YOU who assumed that the comic is about all churches.

But you will post his opinions on Homosexuality no matter what the OP is about. Again if the OP is about being judgemental or about social justice or about poverty - no matter the subject - you or someone will post "But he's a homophobe."

There are plenty of denominations and cults out there now which have put bigotry out as their public face. They proudly wear it, parade it, and cry persecution when people call them on it or refuse to accept the very sanctimonious bullying practiced by the holy chosen of all stripes.

it probably is dependent upon the consumer. I see it and agree that all religions are bigoted. You however may have a different view. I think it was delivered in a perfect way. The original OP said nothing other than paste part of the "joke". Sorry to me it is a joke to you it may be offensive. See how that works?

I was in a bigoted church and one day the religious rose colored glasses fell off when I was told NOT to sit with my woman friend who was a different race because some of the parishioners were upset that we were an interracial couple. Broke my heart and destroyed a lot of my faith in amerikkkaner christianity. Keep telling the truth about amerikkkan christianity whenever and wherever you can. I got your back.

since its inception.

What do you expect from a 'faith' teaching that one needs to be 'saved' by a deified Jewish rabbi? You tear people down to build them up under your perceptual process - a sacrilegious process in my book. Man vs. man, nothing godlike about any of it.

Greater good and consciousness is endemic to our bearing on this earth, it's a birthright.

The Evils of Capitalism; a satire to resolve or goodness without a heart

A new amendment:

A charged atmosphere is kindling in what many observers call a “labor epiphany.” The majority fifty one percent will be the deciders as established in the Constitution. Not the president as in the “BUSH” era of mission accomplished zoonosis. The new world order understands that terrorism has been in politics for the last ten millenniums. Therefore the only eradication other than war is obsessive continuous, relentless shame and embarrassment recorded in history and all literature without secrecy for men of all time to witness and judge.

Whereas We the People

Now know no matter either Republican or a Democratic form of business mission that harbors basic violations in phony Constitutional values will be the standard to rate a company with its ability to pay taxes. So without future a du those companies that fail the new fair tax initiative will be arrested and convicted for high crimes against We the People.

Moreover Congressional, Senate, and Supreme Court free speech money supporters with persons working in and with direct operatives and family associated friends in doing business with the government, including those very connected in media alleged in cover up crimes minor or high value those persons hiding and abetting lobby types are also to be condemned to eternal banishment in the nether world other than human form.

To be included are military connected profiteers, and banking title home fraud, securities flash crash cover ups, off shore tax evasion and academic educational swindling, deception in misinformation of history shall forfeit all property money and possessions to be reformed to enjoy while still alive and We the People believing in the right to life all will be available to contemporary charity and open to services in the government via unemployment opportunities, if preferred new boot straps with a shiny new belt buckle, food stamps, a guide to shelters nationwide. When available, Bush endorsed authentic Air force flight suits after budget cuts take effect.

Violators will be arrested and convicted for a minimum of twenty years hard labor in the banana farms of Central America as directed and owned by the Bush family.
