Does smoking pot cause 'man boobs'?

As legalized medical marijuana gains acceptance across the country, a long-smoldering question burns a little hotter.

In the vernacular, stoners ask, "Do doobies make boobies?" Plastic surgeons phrase it more scientifically. "Does marijuana cause gynecomastia?"

Speculation that men who smoke pot are prone to develop abnormal breast tissue or "man boobs" has been around for decades. The first scientific paper examining the clinical impact of the drug's active ingredient, THC, on hormonal systems was published in 1972 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

This was about the same time Brewer & Shipley stoked Spiro Agnew's ire with the hit single "One Toke Over the Line." The drug's ability to stoke controversy has not abated. The 1972 study found that the drug has "widespread effects on multiple hormonal systems, including gonadal, adrenal, prolactin, growth hormone, and thyroid hormone regulation." When the drug throws off the normal balance of hormones, estrogen levels rise and stimulate breast tissue growth.

http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/health/marijuana-smokers-thinner-obese-non-smokers-new-study-article-1.951671

Stoners may spend a lot of time on the couch and craving White Castle, but they apparently don't let their bodies go to pot.

People who smoke marijuana regularly are less likely to be obese than non-pot smokers, according to a new study by French researches.

"We found that cannabis users are less likely to be obese than non-users," Dr. Yann Le Strat, French psychiatrist and co-author of a new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology told MSNBC. "We were so surprised, we thought we had [made] a mistake.”

Using data from two epidemiologic studies of U.S. adults, researchers found that between 22% to 25% of participants who didn’t smoke pot were obese.
But only between 14% and 17% of those people who admitted to taking a toke at least three times a week were overweight.

I also think the opposition comes also from the fact that SMOKING kills! Cannot have people smoking anything; cigs, pot, or even e-cigs. However, doctors giving scripts for Oxyconde (medicine???) like candy is just fine and dandy because the pharms are making $$$$ from that.

I wonder if eating (hash) it in brownies would work too? Old enough to remember those days. lol Oh, nevermind. Brownies will make you FAT. lol

People are eating the extracted hash oils and vaping them. Smoking is really going out of style Plus, you get more medicinal effects from eating the hash oils instead of burning them.

from Jack Herer's "Emperor":

Nahas is still the darling favorite of the DEA and NIDA (National Institute of Drug Abuse) yet no anti-marijuana studies of Nahas’ have ever been replicated in countless other research attempts. Columbia University specifically disassociated itself from Nahas’ marijuana research in a specially-called press conference in 1975!

Old, discredited Nahas studies are still trotted out by the Drug Enforcement Administration today, and deliberately given to unknowledgeable parents’ groups, churches, and PTAs as valid research regarding the evils of pot.

The dissemination of Nahas’* dangerous horror stories is paid for with your tax dollar, even years after the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1976 specifically forbade Nahas from getting another penny of U.S. government money for cannabis studies because of his embarrassing research in the early 1970s.

*Nahas, in December 1983, under ridicule from his peers and a funding cut-off from NIDA renounced all his old THC metabolite build-up and unique chromosome petri dish tissue damage studies, conclusions, and extrapolations.

Yet the DEA, NIDA, VISTA, the “War on Drugs”, and now-deceased writer Peggy Mann (in Reader’s Digest articles and her book Marijuana Alert, with foreward by Nancy Reagan) have used these discredited studies on parents’ groups such as Parents for a Drug Free Youth, etc., often with Nahas as a highly paid guest lecturer, without a word of how his studies are really considered by his peers.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/08/health/dr-gabriel-nahas-researcher-who-waged-a-campaign-against-marijuana-dies-at-92.html?_r=0

"The New England Journal of Medicine once described his work as “psychopharmacological McCarthyism that compels him to use half-truths, innuendo and unverifiable assertions.” (...) "In 1972, he published his first book about the dangers of the drug, “Marihuana: Deceptive Weed.” In 1974, he announced that he had discovered a link between the drug and the body’s immune system. “The findings represent the first direct evidence of cellular damage from marijuana in man,” he said in a statement.

But scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles, who studied the chromosomes of volunteers who smoked marijuana, found no deficiency in immune responses and no chromosome abnormalities, which Dr. Nahas had also predicted. Nevertheless, Dr. Nahas suggested that the results prompt reconsideration of a recent government report that marijuana’s dangers were less than those of alcohol."

Is an insult to waterfowl. Playboy mag had the goober's number back in the '70's - IIRC, his studies showing brain cell damage from weed study protocol included puree' of said brain cells in a blender! But, at the time, the NIH would only pay for negative studies on pot - I suppose you could say his bias was market-driven. And you know the best liars beleive every word of it themselves......
