Iraqi teens stoned to death for wearing 'emo' clothes
By msnbc.com staff and news services
BAGHDAD -- At least 14 youths have been stoned to death in Baghdad in the past three weeks in what appears to be a campaign by Shiite militants against youths wearing Western-style "emo" clothes and haircuts, security and hospital sources say.
Militants in Shiite neighborhoods where the stonings have taken place circulated lists on Saturday naming more youths targeted to be killed if they do not change the way they dress.
The killings have taken place since Iraq's interior ministry drew attention to the "emo" subculture last month, labeling it "Satanism" and ordering a community police force to stamp it out.
"Emo" is a genre of punk rock music that originated in the United States in the 1980s. Fans are known for their distinctive dress, often including tight jeans, T-shirts with logos and distinctive long or spiky haircuts.

The article does state that leading Shiite clerics oppose these murders.

(13,184 posts)I'll admit to not being that up with punkoid subcultures, but I always thought they were just kind of annoying.
But I was in Mexico City a couple of years ago, and there was a spate of attacks on emos in different cities, including some murders. There was cell phone video of some emo girl getting stomped to death. Didn't have anything to do with Islam, as far as I know.

(17,493 posts)Why a truly religious person who had any real understanding of their religion would decide to murder another person is beyond me.

(37,648 posts)Stoning kids for being rebellious in their clothing is no way to recruit the younger generation. The kids not stoned to death will grow up and grow old, and will remember. They will likely be more tolerant than their fathers, as the hippie dippies were/are in America.
How horrible for these kids.

(40,416 posts)I'm a long time atheist. I'm not against religious people, but I am against religion. There's always some wackaloon in every denomination who's willing to make the most nonsensical pronouncements.
But fundementalist Islam and Christianity seriously worry me. I don't know how we're going to manage to survive as a world with this total lunacy going on nearly everywhere you look.
I guess here's one solution that's been suggested:
We'll save Australia.
Don't want to hurt no kangaroo.
We'll build an all-American amusement park there.
They've got surfing, too.[/]

I have no beef at all with mainstream Christians who are perfectly nice, perfectly normal people. It's the extremists and fanatics that scare me.

Politcal correctness can really take one into the realm of simple unreality.
One can grasp at the false equivalence of
Western Judaeo Christian culture with one
in which "honor killings" have only recently
become illegal with only mild penalites
but it simply won't fly.

(135,425 posts)The clerics oppose the murders because they'd rather they be forced to recant publicly and hanged from a crane for crimes against Islam...that's how THEY roll...IMO, anyway. It's not that they're pissed that these poor kids are dead, they're pissed that they didn't get to pronounce the judgment to decide how they would die.
See what al-Sadr, the Biggest Pig at The Dance, has to say about these poor teens?
"They are a plague on Muslim society, and those responsible should eliminate them through legal means," he said.
This description makes them sound SO dangerous, ya? A real "plague on Muslim society..."--gimme a break:

(19,240 posts)Even if youths have been stoned to death in Iraq do we know for sure it was because of how they were dressed and not for some other reason, such as rival gang warfare, ethnic violence, economically motivated (i.e robbery).
"Oh those wild and crazy Muslims are soooo extreme!" is one of the MSM's favorite narratives.
