Limbaugh Promotes A New Myth: Greeks Gave Themselves HIV For Welfare Money

Rush Limbaugh is citing an erroneous report about HIV in Greece to falsely claim that half of all recent infections there were self-inflicted for the purpose of receiving government benefits. In fact, the original report on AIDS and HIV in Greece does not confirm a single instance of a person intentionally infecting himself with HIV.

Limbaugh is surely fascinated by this erroneous report because it fits into the false right-wing narrative that government programs that help the poor encourage laziness and dependency.

Limbaugh read from a post about Greece by the British magazine New Scientist during his November 25 radio show:

But the Internet's anonymity and broad access make it possible to find someone with like interests, no matter how outlandish. Carlos surfs online about twenty hours a week looking for men to have sex with, usually frequenting sites such as bareback.com and barebackcity.com, plus a number of Internet discussion groups. Most of the Web sites use the pretense that they actually are about barebacking, which is in itself risky and controversial but still a long way from bug chasing. For the Web sites, that distinction is at best razor-thin and more often just an outright lie. "We got Poz4Poz, Neg4Neg and bug chasers looking to join the club," the welcome page to barebackcity.com, which claims 48,000 registered users, up from 28,000 about a year ago, recently said. "Be the first to seed a newbie and give him a pozitive attitude!"

Within this online community, bug chasers revel in their desires, using their own lingo about "poz" and "neg" men, "bug juice" and "conversion" from negative to positive. User profiles include names such as BugChaser21, Knockmeup, BugMeSoon, ConvertMeSir, PozCum4NegHole and GiftGiver. The posters are upfront about seeking HIV, even extremely enthusiastic, possibly because the Web sites are about the only place a bug seeker can really express his desires openly. Under turn-ons, a poster called PozMeChgo craves a "hot poz load deep in me. I really want to be converted!! Breed me/seed me!" Carlos' profile on one Web site lists his screen name as ConvertMe, and he says he wants a man "to fill me up with that poison seed." His AOL Instant Messenger name is Bug Juice Wanted.

and what there is about it that produces people who actively seek to be infected by a fatal disease? No, he has to make everything about how people try to get money from Republicans because it's all about money to Rush and his followers. Everyone is doing their best to get your money without having to work for it, Republicans! He's so materialistic that he can't imagine any other motive besides money.

You know, Rush is in his own way as pathetic and empty as those "bug chasers." Maybe if he would look at that story from a different perspective, he might apply some of it to himself and ask questions about his own self-destructive behavior. Rush is a multi-millionaire, but he's a very unhappy one, which is why he turns to drugs and food and who knows what else to fill that hole inside him. Maybe accumulation and consumption isn't all it's cracked up to be, huh Rush?
