Oakland teen burned on bus ready to go to school

On their first weekend together since that terrible day of fire and fear nearly a month ago, Sasha Fleischman's family puttered around their house in Oakland on Saturday, doing as much as they could that resembled normal. Dad Karl Fleischman fried eggs for breakfast. Sasha Fleischman, 18, browsed the Internet. They took calls from friends.

(snip)

Fleischman came home Wednesday from a San Francisco hospital burn unit after recovering there from second- and third-degree burns suffered when a 16-year-old boy set the teen's skirt ablaze on Nov. 4 while Fleischman was sleeping on an AC Transit bus in Oakland. Fleischman - who was named Luke at birth but now goes by Sasha - identifies as agender, neither female or male, and police say the attack was at least partially motivated by homophobia.

The suspect, Oakland High School student Richard Thomas, has been charged as an adult in the attack. His attorney says the teen is sorry for what he considered a prank gone awry and should be tried as a juvenile.

Fleishman's father and the teenage victim - who prefers to be called "they" rather than "he or "she" - both say that, barring revelations of more damning information, they would prefer the suspect be charged as a juvenile. Kids that young generally don't really know what they're doing, they say.

A 16-year-old isn't old enough to understand that setting someone's clothes on fire could cause serious burns? Really?

which personally I consider old enough to know that lighting somebody's clothes on fire, for any reason, is not a prank and is, quite frankly, attempted murder.

The "prankster" should be grateful I'm not involved because I'd want him charged as an adult. If you are old enough to babysit, then you'd better be goddam old enough to know better than to play with lighters.

then assess what sort of risk he is to everybody around him.

I'm sure the little sociopath is really, really sorry he got caught.
