Christian Rock Band Preaches Hate Of LGBT Community During School Assembly

When Dunkerton High School in Iowa invited a Christian rock band called Junkyard Prophet to perform during a school assembly this past Thursday, they never expected to get a hate filled sermon as part of the deal. But that’s exactly what happened.

According to the Lacrosse Tribune, the message was supposed “to be about bullying and making good choices,” such as being non-violent and against drugs and alcohol. “Instead, junior and senior high students at Dunkerton High School and faculty members said they were assaulted by the group’s extreme opinions on homosexuality and images of aborted fetuses,” along with messages against strong independent women.

After the band performed their music, they separated the boys, girls, and faculty in the building, which should have been an immediate red flag. According to witnesses, the band talked to the boys about the band’s Ten Commandments and talked about musicians that have died of drug overdose. The discussion with the girls was much different. The band told them “to save themselves for their husbands and assume a submissive role in the household. The leader in that effort also forced the young ladies to chant a manta of sorts about remaining pure” and would not allow any of them to leave the room.

One parent, Jennifer Littlefield, told the Tribune about a phone call she received from her daughter after the assembly. “They told my daughter, the girls, that they were going to have mud on their wedding dresses if they weren’t virgins. I couldn’t even understand her, she was crying so hard. They told these kids that anyone who was gay was going to die at the age of 42. It just blows me away that no one stopped this.”

Here are some of their lyrics:

"People be freakin' when we speakin' cuz we burnin it up,

The life you livin', when you sinnin' cuz we tearin it up,

With the word that hot,

From the School of Hard Knocks gonna break the rocks,

We ain't stoppin', the convictions poppin'

Junkyard in the house and the Holy Ghost droppin'."

P.S. the band typically receives $1,500 per performance.

They'd play bad mid-80s pop hits to a mostly Zeppelin/Floyd/Sabbath/Grateful Dead-loving student body. Me and my friends (the metal/punk/hardcore fans of the bunch) would be shaking our heads, chuckling and cringing at the people just sitting there and not getting into it at all. Then the bands would pull out their anti-drug message . . . to a 50-75% alcohol-and-drug-using student body.

"Son, you are preaching to the WRONG choir!"

Be careful! These groups show that their main message is something like 'anti-bullying' or whatever is the message of the moment, but often have another motive.

Once at my school (where I'm a staff member, not a student) a group that was recommended to us by another school (actually a former teacher of OURS was the recommender at this different school) to come an talk about bullying, making good choices, etc. The founders of the group were related to one of the Columbine shooting victims.

The program started out ok, but then took a turn. All of a sudden, the talk was about shunning pornography (and maybe some anti-sex stuff, I don't know, by then I was so shocked I think I quite listening).

Luckily, there wasn't too much of that, but there was enough. I felt we were maybe getting a 'toned down' version, but we in no way as a school were looking for someone to talk about "just say no to pornography" when we signed up for anti-bullying messages. One of the main members of the group had the flu, so arrived late from his hotel room, and I think if he had been feeling better, we would have had a lengthy 'anti-porn, anti- LBGT, anti-whatever' assembly.

We were waiting for parental calls of anger, but luckily were not subject to that.

but when it happened at my school, about 9 years ago, we were not into 'the google' too much then. I think I had a computer in my office, but for us, the whole 'internets' was a new thing.

Anyway, lesson learned. Our biggest error was taking the word of a former staff member who was an OK guy... but he must not have been paying too close attention when the group got going on their "message" at his school....

What I gather from stories in the local paper about it, I'm not sure if there was no vetting of this group, or if the person who decided they should perform had an idea that the assembly would go the way it did and wanted to push that agenda.

Junkyard Prophet claims they are being misrepresented and want a second performance to set the record straight. But neither the school nor the community center will let them perform. Here's an article from the local paper: http://wcfcourier.com/news/local/prophet-eyes-a-second-visit-to-dunkerton/article_159e75de-6af4-5527-93d6-54ec9614d8e7.html

From other stories I get the impression that even some Christian students who basically agree with their message think that the school was a very inappropriate place for the message. Iowa is heavily churched, especially the small towns, but I think a majority don't hold with this sort of forcing it down people's throats.

We had assemblies in the gym. He kept talking about "the greatest friend you'll ever have" and never mentioned the word Jesus. So that made it legal.

I thought he was a complete jackass.

These "school assembly" performances have been around for decades, and many are pretty innocent. Larry Gross ("Junk Food Junkie&quot played in our jr. high. In high school, we got a band called "Free Fare", with a minute or so of non-threatening christian messaging, and a stretched-out version of "Jesus is Just Allright".
