But as the Civil War began, many states had almost half or more of their population in slavery and were attempting to expand slavery into free areas of the USA.
Even after the slaves were emancipated, Debt Peonage victimized blacks yet again, after a period of gains in the post Civil War era.
Almost a century after the Civil War began, blacks in the former confederacy couldn't vote and were segregated from whites by force of law.
In South Africa, Apartheid developed and got far worse before being toppled.
The idea that we can't use the "race card" and overall notions, seemingly popular exclusively among white people (disclaimer: I am white) because we perpetuate racism by referring to it or calling it out...the idea that not speaking of racism because that will help it go away.
That's nonsense. It doesn't work.
If you think it's all gonna get better or not happen again if we just stop talking about it.
6 million more Jews would be alive if that were the case.
Things don't always get better. Things often get worse, so we must be on our guard to defend justice and equality at every moment.

(39,961 posts)none of those issues that allow a person to identify with being a "tribe" will ever go away until we recognize that we all belong to the same tribe, which is human beings. Power flows to those who can most successfully stoke flames against an "other".
When you realize that, you realize that a lot of things that you believe about the world are fictitious and fractious bullshit designed to keep someone in power over everyone else.

and as for the movie, there was some attention to the specific horrors that female slaves faced.
