The reason the conservatives are bashing Nelson Mandela is because the liberals bashed Margaret Thatcher when she died. This is pay back they say. Surprised me but that is what they are telling me. I think it will always be the same. Liberals bash conservatives when they die and conservatives bash liberals when they die. Keep the World going round.

Guess what I found? During the height of the tea party frenzy, they had listings of members who were willing to carpool to tea party rally locations to recruit new members and bragged about the "target rich environment" and successes they'd had in previous rallies. They had tips on how to approach tea partiers, how to avoid detection from organizers and how to spot those that would be the most responsive to their cause. I would say that would be most of them.

They get their hands on you and they warp your mind. They feed on your fears and turn them into hate. My sister was a Mexican national who came into the states illegally with my parents when she was little. She always had compassion for people who suffered under bigotry and injustice, especially the plight of indigenous people in Central America. Now, she adores Reagan and thinks liberation theology was an evil Communist plot and that the Contras were freedom fighters. She was never like this before they brainwashed her.

She used to be very liberal except for being uncomfortable about abortion. She started hanging with more conservative Catholics when she stayed at a convent-run boarding house while going to college and got really radicalized about it. That was when she started getting involved with far-right wing anti-abortion groups like ALL and from there, she got sucked into the fringes. This is a woman that got a Master's Degree as a nurse practitioner and now tells me she doesn't believe in the Big Bang Theory and evolution. Even when it was a Catholic priest, Father Georges Lemaitre, that introduced the Big Bang Theory.

Last year someone kicked my RW brother's front door in while he was out on the road. (My sister is still amazed at that one - they kicked in the door and didn't take a single thing. That may have something to do with the huge pile of John Wayne VHS tapes and Marine Corps memorabilia being the only things in his living room...) Naturally, I got a phone call from my parents: "Can you go over to your brother's house and put a new doorjamb on?"

While we were going over to get the new parts, he told me he loves church because "you can sin all you want, and you just go to church the next day and it wipes it all clean." Two problems with that, so far as I can tell: the only "sinning" he does is whiskey drinking, which isn't much of a sin if it's one at all, and isn't the reason to go to church so you can learn not to sin?

The wingnuts claim that Mandela plead guilty. Flat out liars.

The defendants were accused of sabotage, ordering munitions, recruiting young men for guerrilla warfare, encouraging invasion for foreign military units, and conspiring to obtain funds for revolution from foreign states.

The first accused, Nelson Mandela plead not guilty: "My Lord, it is not I, but the government that should be in the dock. I plead not guilty." Each of the other defendants in turn entered not guilty pleas as well.

42. For balance, something decent from a conservative about Mandela
Fri Dec 6, 2013, 11:33 AM
Dec 2013

Right-wing commentator Mark Steyn used to write newspaper obituaries. He was asked on air to give an obit for Mandela, and he said:

Well, he was a man of enormous grace and dignity. He spent three decades in jail for his political beliefs, and it would have been very easy, particularly once he’d become the champion of a global moment. There were hit pop songs called Free Nelson Mandela, there was a huge all-star rock gala at Wembley Stadium. He was, he became a poster child for the anti-Apartheid cause. And it would have been easy for him once he’d come out of jail to have been a bitter and a partisan and divisive figure. And he wasn’t. He was enormously generous in spirit given what the South African Apartheid state had done to him for the most productive decades of his life. And whatever the problems of South Africa currently, that period when he and F.W. De Klerk, his predecessor, the last Apartheid leader of South Africa, when they basically agreed to a genuine reconciliation, such as one rarely sees in Africa, I think that is his towering achievement.

For an impromptu, one-paragraph effort, that's better than anything I would've come up with.

Now, for the flip side... I read this on FR because your post about the Cruz supporters got me curious about what the Freepers thought. The responses to the post with Steyn's comment were mostly back on the "Communist" and "terrorist" themes. Then there was this truly off-the-wall comment:

Am sure he was a great man in worldly terms for sure, but did he accept or reject Christ, did he stand up for the unborn child? Was he for gay marriage etc, these are the questions I have

I think I have more respect for the people calling Mandela a Communist. They're wrong, but at least they're addressing his actual career, instead of totally missing the point.

ETA link to the FR thread, for those who think they can take it.

I have spent a lifetime waiting for Republican conservatives to be on correct side of an issue. Every single thing they've said over the years has turned out to be lies. Social Security will lead to Communism. Hmm? Don't think so. Vietnam will be a domino for communism. Don't think so. Capitalism his going strong there. Trickle down will work. Hardly. Kerry was a coward. Not according the the United States Navy. Obama-care will destroy America. Wrong again.
How can a group of grown ups be wrong Every Single Time? They must practice at their Think Tanks. If Vegas would allow betting on the long run of social issues the odds would always be 100% against the Republican Party.
As long as racist morons like Cruz control the Republican Party it will always be seen as repugnant to thinking Americans and the rest of the world.
