PBS refused to air anti-Apartheid documentary

The 1985 song by Steve Van Zandt, Sun City, encouraged an entertainer boycott in opposition to South African Apartheid.

"Van Zandt and Schechter also struggled to get the documentary seen. Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) refused to broadcast the non-profit film "The Making of Sun City" even though it won the International Documentary Association's top honors in 1986; PBS claimed the featured artists were also involved in making the film and were therefore "self-promoting."

(In contrast, PBS chose to broadcast The Making of "Raiders of the Lost Ark", which was made as a promotional exercise by the for-profit Paramount Pictures and Lucasfilm Ltd..)"

I stopped donating to PBS shortly after this.

Grats to WNYC in NY for airing an updated version of it later.

what you wish for....I also am disappointed at the PBS decision (this was many moons ago) but without PBS my tv viewing would be pretty much over.

They are the last of the "networks" that still have journalistic integrity. IMO, everything does not have to be political, if that were the case we have plenty of right wing stations and even a few to the left.

I will continue to donate to PBS for excellent content that is not available anywhere else and am very thankful that such a network still exists.

BTW - who watches these "reality" networks? Plenty of people and it shows that we need to improve out education system in the US of A.

Peace

Resist the move toward an uninformed and misinformed state.
