3. That was in 2005

Mandela was told about this Senator Obama, an upcoming star who had delivered a great speech at the Democratic Party Convention in 2004. Mandela called Obama and said he wanted to meet with him. Obama went to his hotel and his assistant took the photo. This was their only meeting.

It's a beautiful haunting photo with Obama as the shadow over him. What's striking is that they are both very tall men.

4. The way the photograph struck me was ...

...not of Obama as a shadow, but rather as a cautious silhouette - something not fully filled in - reaching to touch the relaxed, vibrant soul before him. A visit from a time yet to arrive.

Very moving.
