Car Crashes Through Trader Joe's On Long Island

More than a dozen people have been reported injured after a woman drove her car into a Trader Joe's grocery store on Long Island on Friday, the New York Post reports.

The store is in Oceanside, Long Island. At least one person is seriously injured, according to NBC New York.

The driver is reportedly an elderly woman, according to the Post. Her car might have pinned one man in an aisle. Police found the man trapped under the vehicle.

As more people are holding two jobs, or both people in a marriage have to work, there is no support for the elderly, who need to go places. The social safety net has been so badly damaged by today's me-too culture that it can't be used to provide transportation to the elderly.

I see it every day. I've stopped on more than one occasion to offer a ride to an elderly person trying to manage everyday chores even in the most horrid of weather... even on walkers, trying to lug bags of groceries or make it to a doctor's office. So many of our elderly have simply been discarded in this society and its an absolute disgrace.

people who couldn't drive anymore were on scooters along the highway.
The town had a speed limit of 35mph which may have helped.
One day my mother became very frustrated trying to go to the next town for a Dr.'s appointment... she was on a road in her town and insisted that she was in the other town.
She had been getting into trouble like this for awhile and fought me whenever I offered to drive her. She would go shopping in the winter leaving my dad in a running car. It was crazy.
Finally I spoke with her doctor about it and he told her she couldn't drive anymore.
I was afraid that she'd run someone down and be sued for all they were worth.
It is a very frustrating time in an older person's life when they lose the ability to drive safely.
She would repair minor injuries to her car with scotch tape, and hope nobody noticed.
Sad, really, but also very dangerous. I hope I can take the news from my children with grace when that time comes for me.

In my line of work, we see this probably 10 to 15 times a year. I have yet to pin down a demographic that does this more often than others. We have one township where this has happened 4 times in the past 4 years, 2 of which had injuries. They still will not allow us to put up those concrete bollards.

We've had a few where someone pulling into the lot would ram into a building. But most are folks getting into their car, selecting drive instead of reverse and boom! New door.

I think that the biggest cause is folks parking head on, with their front tires touching the curb. They put the car into gear (what they think is reverse), when the car does not move, they give it more gas. Car hops the curb and in a panic they push the accelerator harder.
