in genetic engineering: big flying monkeys are obvious, but it wastes capacity if a giant monkey is only carrying a small car, and there's no backup if the single monkey malfunctions in flight. On the other hand, small monkeys are scalable and there's a built in redundancy (safety factor) if many monkeys group together to carry each vehicle - but if they're too small then it takes a long time to get them all organized.

They should probably just blow up the bridge now, and then organize a conference to discuss the zeppelin vs. big monkeys vs. small monkeys vs. other(?) set of options...

Using flying monkeys? Then we could settle, once and for all, the age-old debate of what's better? A few big flying monkeys (Plato's view) or multiple smaller flying monkeys (the paradigm of the Socratic School).

Personally, I think we should take the 21st century approach to monkeys. I think I speak for most progressives when I quote Chaucer, who once said, "There's no way I can finish writing down these Tales with all the fucking cyborg-monkeys shooting up downtown Canterbury with their laser tails!"

and see who reaches the middle first? That would be unimpeachable proof, to settle the ancient argument.

Chaucer was a putz, though - if you can't write bawdy tales just 'cause a couple of nuclear-powered laser-shooting cyborg-monkeys are around, are you really able to call yourself an artist? And don't get me started on Coleridge; he ditched his poem and scampered under the bed just because one single flying monkey dropped by to ask directions to Porlock...

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Dec 6, 2013, 09:24 PM, and the Jury voted 2-4 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Different thread, different jury, different outcome? Let's see if the poster can keep from getting banned in this one. Anyway, this post doesn't come to the level of the reasons for the alert.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT and said: I'm voting to hide because this is flamebait. If he genuinely wanted to discuss this issue (which may actually be well worth discussing) he would have provided a link and some info. IMO he is being very disingenuous so I vote to hide.

It began with his thread questioning if some unspecified action of the NC DOT would have occurred at a different time of year ... no mention of what action he was referencing. A poster replied politely asking him for a link, and the OP went into full-on jerk mode, with a "Why should I do your work for you?" It deteriorated from there. A truly odd thread.

'Twas not "a group of posters", it was *I*. I have preserved the originating post in my journal: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=journals&uid=106679&page=3 (1st entry).

Alas, since the Meta group no longer exists, the full context of the creation of the "Taterguy Exception" can no longer be accessed.

It's quite true that the "exception" was never endorsed by the Admins, but it did become a widespread DU meme, for which I shall always be fucking proud.

I fell in love with it when, as a freshman at UNC-Chapel Hill (thank you, GI Bill), a couple of my in-state buddies decides that I needed to experience the Outer Banks. It's been a vacation staple ever since.
