Using Internet Explorer leaves one's computer far more vulnerable to malware and breaches in privacy than Firefox, Chrome, Safari or Opera. Also, some browsers, such as Firefox, have way more plug-in and extension options that allow one to customize one's browser. Chrome and Firefox will even block or warn their users of insecure plug-ins.

You can install them all at once, if you have the disk space. You'll also want to install a good anti-virus program. There are some really good free ones out there, such as AVG and Avast. AVG and Avast also offer upgraded versions that offer more protection for a reasonable amount of money. The claims Chromebook is making about being safer are probably based on a laptop that doesn't have anti-virus software installed. Most come with only a trial version of either McAfee or Norton Anti-virus. After that, you have to subscribe or install something else.

I suspect that you could also load Firefox, Opera or Safari onto your Chromebook, and use them instead of Chrome, if you prefer one of them over Chrome. I don't know a whole lot about Chromebook.

But, Chrome is generally a pretty good browser. And, not having a DVD drive isn't really a big deal if you don't burn DVDs. One can easily watch movies on Netflix, etc., so no real need for one. Nothing wrong with saving stuff to the Cloud, either. Probably a better thing as far as saving stuff goes.

Was getting that on DU every time the page changed. Not on any other site though. VERY irritating!

Try using a different browser.

If I wasn't so old and set in my ways and not afraid, I'd try another browser.

until the latest fantabulous update from Adobe.

I personally cannot stand Firefox, because every time I open THAT stupid browser, instead of opening, it spends five minutes (or it seems like that) updating instead of actually opening.

I sort of expect my machines to be more servile, instead of basically saying "yes, I will get to what you want after I finish doing what I want"

I had the worst time with it. I couldn't get some YouTube videos to play in either browser without having to use the Google HTML5 player, which is a royal pain in the ass. It all seems to be working fine now, however.

As for the updates, as someone suggested, you can turn off the automatic updates. Go under "Tools" in the menu, click on "Options", then "Advanced". Click on the "Updates" tab and either turn it off, or hit the check box that requests a warning when there is an update available. You'll have the option to upgrade then or put it off until later. Your home page may also cause Firefox to load slowly, depending on what you have for a home page. I had my set to Yahoo!, but with all the videos and crap, it took forever to load it and Firefox.

Google Chrome is even worse when it comes to updating without permission. I had to take it off my old desktop because it is such a damn resource hog when it updates. I even turned off the automatic updates, and still updated without asking. It basically froze up my computer until it was finished downloading. Pissed me off to no end. Windows XP sometimes updates without permission, too, even though I have it set to warn me about updates. Really annoying...

If you're determined to stick with IE, have you considered upgrading to IE 10 or 11?

You may have to enable it for other sites to work well.

I think that is it one of the advertisements that is causing the problem.
