134 roosters put down in Calif cock-fighting probe

Authorities in Southern California have killed 134 roosters that were discovered in the small town of Oasis during an investigation into a cockfighting ring.

The Desert Sun reported Friday (http://mydesert.co/IRXo2L) that Riverside County sheriff's deputies also uncovered about 10 boxes of blades used in cockfighting, a cockfighting ring and a large trophy.

John Welsh, a spokesman for the county's Department of Animal Services, says the birds were located after someone called in a report of animal cruelty.

The owner was not arrested but could face $3,000 in fines and citations.

1. These types of stories just make me physically ill.

I just can't get in the headspace of someone who would view cock fighting or dog fighting as entertainment/sport. It's a special kind of fucked up, and should have far more serious consequences than it does. That's probably as much as I say without becoming incoherent with rage.

than a rooster in a factory farm. So the authorities "rescue" them by killing them?

3. They can't be kept with other birds.

They will attack other birds until they're dead- and they will continue to peck at a dead coop-mate until exhausted, or they die themselves, choosing to fight rather than eat, drink, or sleep.
