According to a White House pool report, a "deafening roar" echoed throughout FNB Stadium in Soweto, South Africa when the Obamas were shown on the video screens. The cheering reportedly lasted nearly 30 seconds.
The President also drew a thunderous ovation when he approached the podium to deliver remarks in honor of the late South African leader.

(15,370 posts)Every time Bush II opened his mouth, I cringed. I still cringe when any Republican says something intended to show some modicum of intelligence - especially about the world outside the US. They have no idea - none - how ridiculous they appear on the world stage, where a fool quickly outs him/herself for all to see.
It is sad, because I remember earlier days when there were some (in foreign affairs, actually quite a few) reasonable Republicans - none of whom would be considered "acceptable" in today's GOP. Richard Lugar was among the last GOPers standing to fit this mold.
I do think that a LOT of Americans do appreciate President Obama, however. When the RW media memes and themes get to be too much, just remember those Dem voter turnouts in 2008 and 2012!
So, despite RW hysteria and domination of US airwaves, there are quite a few of us Americans who are very proud of the Prez - even while we may differ with him on certain issues from time to time.

Talk from POTUS justifying NSA spying at the same time that tributes come in regarding Mandela.
If the President's design for a world enslaved by NAFTA, CAFTA and now the TPP comes to pass, there won't be any country's left with teh type of decent officials who will be able to protest the imprisonment of a true leader, as happened when Mandela was in prison.
It was various influential officials across the world who demanded and got the release of Mandela from his "stint" in jail.
When the huge arm of these "Trade Agreements" destroys the democratic processes of the other nations - so that all nations resemble the banana republic we now have at work in this country - there won't be any future Mandelas living free from rendition, life long imprisonment, or execution by drone.
