But I guess, much of that animosity still owes back to the old days when Cuba dared to rebel against their US-supported dictatorship.

The selective outrage is telling.

the wrong direction in the area of human rights.

We are not really in a position to criticize anyone else.

The fact that the Havana regime outlasted the Warsaw Pact for over 20 years seems to indicate that the Castros have a measure of popular support on the island that the émigrés LACK.

This is apparent not only to progressives, but also moderates, moderate-conservatives, and even hard-right social Darwinists who don't like "losers" of ANY stripe.

and most who condemn here quote from the comics they read as opposed to finding out by actual spending time there.

Yes - I appreciate that's easy for me to say being English as I could easily book a flight this afternoon and be back there in a day or so.

Please don't read into my posts what isn't there. I said that the island Cubans supported the current Havana regime as the legitimate state. That DOESN'T mean that I am a wide-eyed, open-mouthed and credulous supporter of each and every jot and tittle of the current Havana regime's policies. I am saying that the island Cubans see the current Cuban government as the legitimate state--they may well have disagreements with that regime's policies, but that is a discussion for a separate time and place.

I admit I entertain what some gen-u-ine leftists consider "bourgeois" ideas towards elections. That being said, I do wish that the Havana regime would allow people like Diaz-Balart, Ros-Lehtinen, and Papi Cruz to stand for office in Cuba. I would be very interested to see how a proletarian, social-democrat minded electorate would vote against candidates saddled with the émigrés' kick-em-when they're down trade policies, the plantation-veranda mindset so common to the emigre right, and the Tea Party blather of which I am certain island Cubans have at least heard of.

and cast his magical spell on the good, but simple Cubans who just didn't know how good they had it under the reich-wing parasites.

And now we can't get rid of the evil Communists because Satan is in control of Cuba.
