(81,383 posts)Glad you're here! LOVE IT!!! We have four cats and they're soooo wonderful! I've had cats all my life. I find they grow even more affectionate as they age. Even the persnickety ones.

(22,271 posts)I have 6 cats and a feral kitten (about 8 weeks old and full of fleas) just adopted us. She has totally fallen in love with one of our females, Erica and Erica led her into the house and I was able to close the door behind her. We named her Alaska as she is almost entirely white, long-haired and as cute as can be. We'll get her de-flead (when she's old enough), spayed, shots and get her ready to adopt out to a good home.

(1,389 posts)We have three and they all showed up at our place. One nine years ago, one seven years ago, and one about a year and a half ago. They are, in order of age, Kittie, Sandy Dandy, and Mr. Fluff. They all get on well with our 14 year old mutt, Jasmine, and our 4 year old Newfoundland, Karma. Our children...................!

(22,271 posts)We've only been able to touch her a couple of times but if we get near her she almost always skeedadles under something. She's only been in for a little over a week and we've made LOTS of progress (she's currently in the family room sleeping on one of the chairs) but we're not quite to bath stage yet. She'll get there. I've taken in feral cats/kittens before and it's important that you take your time and let them come to you. If you try to trap them/hold them down/confine them, they'll associate those actions with all humans and it becomes problematic if you're trying to domesticate them.
I had another kitten (almost 5 years old now) that was a rescue. She was only 5 weeks old and COVERED with fleas. Luckily, she wasn't feral and so we'd bathe her 4-5 times a day to get the fleas off of her. She'd literally fall asleep in our hands while we were holding her in the warm water. Poor baby was so exhausted from not being able to sleep because of the flea infestation. I was so glad when she hit 12 weeks old and we could get rid of the fleas for good.

(13,985 posts)I wish Alaska all the best x I wish I could do the same, and adopt the strays I'm feeding right now ( 6 of them) but I live in small quarters at the moment and I don't have the space Those babies need our love and support, even the little we can do for them, such as food and water. Hopefully after I finish school I will be able to adopt them.

(22,271 posts)is a big part of what those strays need. I lived in apartments most of my life and they never let me have pets. I finally was able to purchase my own home 14 years ago and I've been surrounded by kitties ever since.
Keep doing what you're doing -- you have good karma coming your way.

(13,985 posts)They're mostly young kittens, but mama kitty comes over too. They get fed by me and another neighbor.
They're lil brats too, they know my car and come running every morning.

(13,985 posts)She is very skidish, she talks/meows at me, but will run as soon as I get any closer
Can barelly see hee. She is a black kitten with white underneath her chin ( they're called toxedo cats I guess ) I love her to bits, but I can't get any closer to her than this.

(9,474 posts)Also, I bathe them with a citrus based dishwashing detergent, like lemon Joy. Fleas hate it(so do the kitties), but it works well and doesnt hurt the kitties (well, maybe their pride).
So great that you are doing this. My niece rescues strays and is involved in the trap/spay/neuter/release programs for ferals. She's really good at the trap/spay/neuter part, but as for the release part, not so much, which is why my sister now has 2 disabled kittens that my niece couldn't find homes for.
As for me, I got talked into fostering 11 kittens + the mother. Was only supposed to have them until they were weaned and could be placed for adoption. Unfortumately, they all tested positive for feline leukemia, so I still have 4 kittens and the mama cat, but the others didn't make it. I also have 4 ferals in their own indoor/outdoor enclosure that couldn't be released. This doesn't count my own 4 cats and 3 dogs. I went from cat lover to crazy cat lady overnight!
