(27,787 posts)leave Obama out of any such comparison.
Bush's defenders should feel free to describe and defend why Bush's invasion of Iraq is not the same as Hitler's invasion of Poland.

I'm not even saying I'm against but it is what it is.

(27,787 posts)As a simple example, let's take WWII and Japan. The US did not invade Japan. We did drop two nukes on Japan.
Here's an interesting report on what invading japan would have meant.
https://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/intrel/giangrec.htm
An invasion takes control of the land, and then holds on to it.
We invaded Afghanistan and Iraq. We did not invade Japan. And, at Normandy, we started the liberation of France.
Obama has not invaded any country.
Boom Sound 416
(4,185 posts)But we sure did invade Japanese territory most notably Okinawa.
And I think your definition is a little lenient.
We did put boots in Libya by the way.

(27,787 posts)Again ... before we play the "Obama = Bush = Hitler" game ... some one needs to play out the "Bush = Hitler" part in detail.

(4,185 posts)the point in this thread.
I think that equation is totally blown out and overused and cheapens history. Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that.
Every President has crossed borders and used force. That we didn't raise a flag means nothing. We didn't raise a flag over Japan either. We dropped a nuke in lieu invasion. That equates invasion. We ran a no fly zone over Iraq for ten years without a flag in Baghdad. We bombed the hell out of the Balkans and Pakistan and on and on and on.

(32,046 posts)With that logic then Nixon had no responsibility for anything that happened in the Vietnam War. Everything goes on Johnson. I don't believe that and I don't believe Obama has no responsibility for his actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. On Jan. 20, 2009 he became CIC and everything was on him after that date.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)I did not claim Obama has ZERO responsibility for what happened in Iraq, or Afganistan AFTER he took office.
I said he did not INVADE either country.
Reading is fundamental.

(32,046 posts)Comprehension is even more fundamental.

(4,876 posts)He's not "invading" a country, he's occupying it. No comparison.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)The US maintains bases around the world, with the agreement of the host country. That is not occupation.
Unless you want to redefine what the words mean.

(4,876 posts)Your unbridled defense of anything Obama does is impressive. I give him his props when due but the endless war in Afghanistan is nothing to be proud of, neither is spending millions upon millions to "Drone" the "Enemy".
But hey the Democratic party just loves blind faith so give em what they need!
We are bringing our troops home from Afghanistan. And I've set a timetable. We will have them all out of there by 2014, Obama said in Boulder, Colo., in September 2012.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)Ok.
And the word occupation has an actual meaning. If the words don't have meaning then the debate is also without meaning.

(31,011 posts)The Hague Convention of 1907 specifies that territory is considered occupied when placed under the authority of the hostile army.
If Karzai does not sign the security pact that he helped write then the US would pull troops out by the end of next year. It's likely he will sign it considering that $4 billion in aid is at risk if he doesn't.
The military is not occupying Afghanistan. This is a complicated process which is even more so with the politics that Karzai is playing.

(27,787 posts)they can include Obama just as soon as they clarify the Bush / Hitler similarities.

(5,917 posts)On May 2nd, 1933, the day after Labor day, Nazi groups occupied union halls and labor leaders were arrested. Trade Unions were outlawed by Adolf Hitler, while collective bargaining and the right to strike was abolished
On 2nd of May, Hitler outlawed the trade unions. SA seized all buildings, including printing presses, newspapers and all assets
sounds familiar clear channel abolishing all liberal radio, conservatives control the news. killing 6 million was one of the last things he did.
