Contractor: Safety Laws “Archaic” (Then a Wall Collapse Kills Somebody on Their Jobsite).

One worker died and two others were injured after a retaining wall collapsed in Maybrook, NY last week. Halmar International, which owns the three-acre site where the incident occurred, is doing work on a $21.2 million project for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to rebuild parts of the Catskill Aqueduct. The workers were pouring concrete into wooden forms while constructing a replica of the Aqueduct when the steel and wood wall collapsed.

Halmar Principal Chris Larsen said he was “very shocked and very saddened” by the tragedy:

“Right now, everything is under full investigation to determine the cause of the accident. At this time, I can’t really speculate what the cause was. We are conducting our own investigation as well as OSHA,” Larsen said. “Hopefully, as soon as possible, we reach some conclusions and will be able to understand what happened.”

The incident was turned over to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) which has yet to release the findings of their investigation. LoHud.com notes that Halmar has been previously cited for safety violations:
