Hey Floridians. A link to medical marijuana petition. 82% support, but many signatures needed.

I have been waiting for someone to call or contact me in some way, but no luck. I just did some reading up on this today.

Florida Medical Marijuana Supporters Have Money, Need Signatures And Court Approval

With 82 percent of Florida poll respondents in favor of marijuana-as-medicine, it appears Florida could become the 21st state with medical outlets selling pot, and the first Southern state to get on board. First, though, the court would need to give its approval for the measure to end up on the November 2014 ballot.

In addition, the group behind the movement, People United For Medical Marijuana, will have to come up with 700,000 signatures to get it on the ballot. It claims to already have 500,000.

....This year, People United has taken in $876,302 in campaign donations, according to records. It’s biggest individual supporter has been lawyer John Morgan of Morgan & Morgan in Orlando, who has given $250,000. His firm is ground zero for a lot of the organizing for this medicinal effort. Second place in the individual donor sweepstakes goes to philanthropist and retired pharmaceutical executive Barbara Stiefel, who has dropped $150,000 into the kitty.

John Morgan says he could kick himself for the fact the petition was put on hold while the state Supreme Court heard the case. This article says they need 400,000 signatures, most probably to have a margin of error when the verification begins.

Medical marijuana petition effort racing against time

Orlando lawyer John Morgan has spent a lot of his time and millions of his own dollars to get medical marijuana on the ballot for a vote next year.

But now, according to partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times, Morgan made a costly mistake that may jeopardize the entire campaign.

United for Care, the group pushing for a constitutional amendment, says it needs about 400,000 more petition signatures and only has a month to get it done.

That may be the result of a Morgan mistake. The longtime attorney said he suspended a paid petition signature-gathering campaign for about a month in the fall. He said the campaign held off while the Florida Supreme Court made a decision on ballot language regarding medical marijuana.

Morgan said he is kicking himself over that decision.

I found the site at which you can fill out the petition, print it off and mail it to the group.

There is a box to sign to get updates on the progress.

Both Democrats running support this issue, Charlie Crist and Nan Rich. Bill Nelson is supposedly standing in the wings to run if needed, and he does NOT support it.

Not a single mailing list I am on has sent me a link. And I am on many progressive Florida lists.

I am printing it off and getting it mailed as well.

You can be in favor of something, but you have to say so. I get robocalls and other calls about everything else, but not this.

was not only supporting it, his wife is out there knocking on doors with petitions for it.

But yeah, other than the Morgan commercials I've heard nothing - no calls, no mail, no emails - and I'm on a few lists too.

4. Did You Know That It Is Actually A Repub Woman

that began this campaign way back when. I read an article some time ago about the reason she wanted to legalize this. Seems one of her relatives was dying of cancer (I think) and was able to use MJ. I think it was her grandfather, but don't remember for sure. Also, they've been trying to get support for many years.

Perhaps I should have researched this before commenting with so few facts. But I do recall reading about her story. I've seen the Morgan & Morgan commercials for such a long time I actually thought they were Repukes. Was very surprised that they were Democrats and that she actually contacted them.

I'm glad to see some push by them because it didn't seem it was gathering that much steam. Also, I'm NOT surprised that Sarasota/Bradenton/Venice don't have a place to contact. Such a very RED county!

Thanks for posting this... sure hope this will make a lot of difference. I would also like to say that I've met so so many people who use MJ, and it doesn't matter WHAT political party you belong to. It's always in use at most parties I attend. I do want to say that I no longer smoke, but did for a very long time. My reason? I started gaining weight because everyone knows what it does to your appetite. I have OCD and gaining weight is ONE fear that overwhelms me. I'm not overweight, nor am I anorexic, but kind of just right. If not for that I have no problem using it or being around others who do.

It worked.

There are many Republicans supporting it. I have been surprised to hear some of the many tea party folks around here express support.

Even though there is great support for it, people have to sign the petition. If they don't get enough signatures it won't matter.

Morgan and Morgan are Democrats to the core. They are also beyond Crist's campaign big time.

I have been surprised at the lack of contact with me over it....I am on so many mailing lists. I guess the Democratic party is not really coming out in support of it though Crist and Rich are.

And of course as usual Bill Nelson is not.

"finger in the wind" Nelson. Very DLC! I would really, really dislike it if he decided to run for Governor. But, I do have to admit that I didn't know about Morgan & Morgan. Actually, I thought they were out of Tampa too.

But I WILL do my best to get this moving. You know we have so many Snow Birds and many have asked me about this issue. My response has always been that I felt Florida would be one of the LAST states to get in the game. Maybe not. Getting rid of Scott would be one block (bloke) out of the way!

Hate to use the word HOPE, but really good to see this out there now.

Just this past week end my husband and one of his friends welcomed a Tea Party family to the neighborhood. THEY found out that they DO support legalization. Have to say I didn't see that one coming.

But that's progress!

Floridians are quite capable of understanding what legislation called Use of Marijuana for Certain Medical Conditions is all about. And they're up to the task of deciding for themselves whether loved ones suffering from Parkinson's, cancer and other debilitating diseases should be allowed to use marijuana. The drug is known to ameliorate pain, nausea and other agonizing conditions.

Twenty states, along with the District of Columbia, allow medical marijuana. And while the drug remains banned by federal law, federal authorities have signaled a move a way from personal-use prosecutions. Still, in Florida, lawmakers refuse to discuss the issue.

..People United for Medical Marijuana, the group advocating for the state constitutional amendment, wants to make it legal for doctors to prescribe marijuana for medical reasons. So far, 300,000 Floridians have signed a petition to place the measure on the next ballot, of the nearly 684,000 required by law. To be adopted, the proposed amendment would need to be approved by 60 percent of state voters, a high threshold meant to clearly signal the people's will.

....The amendment also ensures caregivers may assist patients in the use of medical marijuana without fear of arrest; directs the Department of Health to register and regulate medical marijuana dispensaries, and issue medical ID cards; and clarifies that it does not authorize non-medical use, possession or production of pot.

The proposal includes several medical conditions under the term "debilitating medical conditions," including cancer, glaucoma and Parkinson's.

Yes, put it on the ballot.
