Former Chief of staff for Sen. Lamar Alexander accused of child porn possession, distribution

WASHINGTON — The fired chief of staff for U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander was expected Thursday in federal court after the aide's arrest on probable cause for possession and distribution of child pornography, authorities said.

Ryan Loskarn was a rising star who had spent the past decade working his way up to increasingly important posts in the U.S. House and then the Senate.

According to a filing with the U.S. District Court in Washington Thursday, police used a ram to enter Loskarn's home the day before, and noticed that Loskarn put something on the ledge outside his window. It turned out to a portable hard drive with videos depicting child pornography, according to the filing.

The filing states that in 2010, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Toronto Police Service were investigating a movie production company, a majority of whose films feature young nude boys, and found that Loskarn had made several purchases from the company in 2010 and 2011.

Former Alexander aide charged with two felony porn counts

WASHINGTON — Ryan Loskarn, who until this week was chief of staff to U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, was arraigned and charged with two felony crimes Thursday as part of a child pornography investigation.

Loskarn, 35, was charged with possession and distribution of child pornography before U.S. Magistrate John Facciola in Washington.

The possession charge carries a potential maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. The distribution charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years in prison and a maximum of 20 years.

Loskarn, who was removed from Alexander's payroll as soon as the senator learned of the investigation Wednesday, appeared in federal court wearing glasses and a bluish-gray windbreaker-type jacket, along with blue pants. Throughout most of the 10-minute proceeding, he sat pensively at the defendant's table resting his elbow on the table and his face on his hand.

Alexander, Loskarn's boss since 2009, announced the raid in a Wednesday statement and said he was placing his top staffer - who earned approximately $170,000 a year - on unpaid leave. Later in the day, Alexander announced he had fired Loskarn.
