"Scholars Warn CUA Over Koch Cash"

Scholars Warn CUA Over Koch Cash

by Kevin Clarke at America - The National Catholic Review

http://americamagazine.org/content/all-things/scholars-warn-cua-over-koch-cash

"SNIP....................................

A group of about 50 Catholic scholars from across the United States has urged Catholic University President John Garvey to get with the Pope Francis spirit and take advantage of “an opportune time to educate students about the importance of business ethics and global solidarity.”

How?

By treading carefully with a fat donation from the Koch Brothers Foundation. (Other groups are urging CUA to return the dough outright.)

CUA hopes to raise $5 million to support research “into the role principled entrepreneurship can and should play in improving society’s well-being.” The Koch Bros, they of ALEC and Tea Party fame, have offered up $1 million toward that goal. Some Catholic academics, however, are wondering about what ideological strings might be attached to that donation, warning, “We must not ignore the stark contrast between the Koch brothers’ public policy agenda and our Church’s traditional social justice teachings.” The scholars say, “We are concerned that by accepting such a donation you send a confusing message to Catholic students and other faithful Catholics that the Koch brothers’ anti-government, Tea Party ideology has the blessing of a university sanctioned by Catholic bishops.”

According to Catholic University, the grant will enable its School of Business and Economics to recruit and hire three visiting scholars one visiting scholar-practitioner from the business world for research and teaching.

they are outnumbered by more "modern" thinkers. I dropped out after Confirmation and my own independent thoughts about religion, first as an Agnostic, then becoming Atheist. I have several friends that remain Catholic and attend church who are LGBT friendly and pro choice, along with being democrats. They all know my beliefs and not one of them has uttered I will be sent to purgatory.

During the Iraq buildup, the local Catholic priest where I was living, was seen daily on the town square in protest to the war. He also attended rally meetings and was sincere in his disdain for war. I'm sure it made the heavily Protestant town to at least recognize that the war protesters weren't a bunch of hippies.

I also placed my mother in a Catholic run nursing home. It's quaint, clean and the staff has been tremendously helpful in allowing her to be as free as possible. She took up caring for another elderly woman bound in a wheelchair and also assists in folding laundry. It's nice to see her still living out a life with purpose.

That being said, I can understand the angst of both feminists and the LGBT community for the stances the church takes on their rights. I also think they should be routing the pedophiles in their ranks, paying more retribution to the victims, and speaking out more frequently about the hideousness of this practice.

better now that it doesn't seem to want to be a tool of the right wing in the USA. And perhaps it will like being a moral place. And then go after the sick, sick priests like you say and allow all, but especially the powerless poor, to practice birth control.

4. As I said it Coyotl's thread: "Yay! Thanks! I love seeing this get attention."

I'm an alumnus of CUA (BA, 2002) and a signer of one of these letters. The more pressure on the university and the USCCB, the more attention this gets with the focus being on how the ideals of the CKF run counter to those of Pope Francis, the more likely they tell Koch and his money to take a hike.

Edit: I just wish this would draw more interest...I'd love to get it on the Greatest Page. That would be a coup.

Who have been selling the same memes for over half a century:

The United States of Koch: How The Koch Family Bought Our Democracy

http://socialjusticesisters.wordpress.com/2013/05/23/the-united-states-of-koch-how-the-koch-family-bought-our-democracy/

NWO is the new brand they give for the UN. They never bring up the corporatists. The NRA, GOA and CTers are saying the same things the Birchers, KKK and Nazis said. The words are new to take in more people. They call those who oppose the meme sheeple, statists and authoritarians. ironically.

They are taught their enemy is communism, socialism, ACORN, environmentalists, Planned Parenthood, the Democratic Party and most especially Obama. But Libertarians espousing economics that lead to fascism get a free pass.

Because it's a long-term plan and they have funded it all these years. Now they are in the home stretch, stealing the Commons, public education, and wanting to end the social safety net and all laws and regulations on workers, minorities, women, LGBTs and the planet.

A major part of fascism is all kinds of fundamentalism and religious zeal.We can no longer afford this.
