Storage Tote of Puppies Rescued from Cold

MASON CITY, Iowa —A man said he found a storage tote full of puppies sitting on the curb with a sign saying "Free Puppies."

The Humane Society of North Iowa said the man brought the tote to the shelter in Mason City. It has seven cold and wet puppies inside.

Temperatures were in the single digits at the time, so the man said he just grabbed the tote and brought it to the shelter. He said he wants to remain anonymous.

"We are shocked and saddened that anyone would abandon a litter of puppies this way," said Sybil Soukup, executive director of the Humane Society of North Iowa. "With the bitter cold weather we've had recently, it would not have taken long for these pups to suffer serious hypothermia or be frozen to death. There are better alternatives than to leave a litter of helpless puppies stuffed in a storage tote on the curb."

The owner didn't come forward for seven days, so the puppies were put up for adoption. The puppies are estimated to be around 8 weeks of age and in good health. Those interested in adoption are encouraged to contact the shelter.

I hope they all get forever homes soon!

This happens to the cat recue group I work with (with kittens) at least once, sometimes twice a year. Usually 10 to 15 kittens. Yes, in Rubbermaid tubs... or sometimes stuffed into a couple large pet taxis and then abandoned, usually in a strip mall parking lot. Once they were wrapped in a blanket and chucked in a park. Then somebody finds 'em and we get a panicked phone call.

Glad the pups are safe... so cute.
