Accidental Tax Break Saves Wealthiest Americans $100 Billion
Sheldon Adelson makes no secret of his disdain for the estate tax.
Federal law requires billionaires such as Adelson who want to leave fortunes to their children to pay estate or gift taxes of 40 percent on those assets. Adelson has blunted that bite by exploiting a loophole that Congress unintentionally created and that the Internal Revenue Service unsuccessfully challenged.
The popularity of the shelter, known as the Walton grantor retained annuity trust, or GRAT, shows how easy it is for the wealthy to bypass estate and gift taxes.

Nothing such is ever accidental when the rich get richer and when they can do it at the expense of everyone else they are that much happier.

(23,926 posts)4. So cynical. I'm certain it was merely an oversight that ...
a bunch of fucking millionaires mistakenly left in place a loophole which will allow their heirs to avoid paying taxes!
