Food Stamp cuts

My wife and I are desperate. Our daughter (age 48) who was left with serious brain and internal injuries from an appendectomy gone horribly wrong, and our grandaughter (age 8) who was born with cystic fibrosis are living in abject poverty, with no light at the end of the tunnel. They have both been denied disability several times. She can't work and even if she could, her day care for a special needs child is too high. Their snap benefits have already been cut and now I hear they will be cut even more. What does our society say to them? We are helping as much as we can, but now we are down to selling our "stuff". Oh yes, they just cut their housing allowance by $200 a month. Our grandaughter just spent almost 5 weeks at Doernbecher childrens hospital but SS says she is too damned healthy. Anyone have some ideas that could help us? Thank you in advance.

Increased income or assets? Or are these universal cuts to all recipients in your area?

Sorry that is happening to them!

My mom who is 89 had her food card cut by around $40, so now we are helping her also. Thank you for your empathy and happy holidays to you and yours.

I don't know what options are available for them. If you have a decent representative, you might start there. If they could get on SSI it might help offset the SNAP cut.

Like I said, SSI thinks our grandchild is healthy????? They don't keep someone in the hospital almost 5 weeks without a reason do they? Thank you for caring and have a great holiday!

I just read in The Oregonian the other day about a food bank in North Portland that is more like a co-op. You pay $20 a month and then may shop the aisles like a supermarket. No judgmental attitudes, no stigma attached. I think it was in the Sunday newspaper.

Do you live near them?

And regarding the disability denial -- I suggest contacting the congressman and senator for your daughter's area. They can work wonders.

Thanks, the food for the poor has been overwhelmed in Portlandia. And yes we live in the area, but because we live in a seniors only park they can't live with us. We bought them a big 5th wheel trailer and they live in that. I just saw Ron Wyden at Sellwood Park a few months ago but was unable to talk to him other than saying hi as he was leaving. We will try that option and thank you again and have a very nice Christmas.

I have a family member whose SSI claim was stalled for years. The family appealed to Ron Wyden and he made it happen. Write to his Portland office. I believe it will help.

And the cool thing is that when it is finally approved, it is retroactive to the date first filed.

I don't know how this process works, but this eight year old ought to have some of the stash of gifts that KGW-TV is hauling in for children right now. Do you know how to request? I'd be willing to make the request for you, if it is uncomfortable.
