We democratics can't sit on our butts. But honestly I think President Obama is going to get reelected. Of course we know republicans cheat at the polls.

seems to be suicidal for candidates. On the surface, one might say their extremism is some kind of modified southern strategy wherein they will give up the women who see value in planned parenthood because they weren't as likely to vote RW anyway and going to a cultural values battle will help fundraise and will motivate volunteers and voters. And there may be something to that.

But I think one of Lakoff's points is that four years ago no one thought there was a problem/issue with planned parenthood or with birth control or with religious freedom. There simply wasn't two sides of the coin then. Now, it's an issue....and you have pundits weighing in on both sides and debating this and that aspect. The conversation ion has been pulled to the right. And moving the center may mean that this candidate or that one will fall on his sword on election day for being too extreme...but he's clearing the way for more extreme discussion down the road, when today's radical candidate finds himself in a more acceptable election position.

And hasn't this happened over and over? Who could have thought that torture would actually be a debatable issue? Or preventative war? Or the loss of habeus corpus? Or that teachers, union workers, or postal workers would be demonized? That some of the most successful social safety net programs in our history would be commonly perceived as not worthwhile or even evil? Or a congressman calling a president a liar during a POTUS speech?? All these things, and more, have happened...are now part of national discourse...have cleared the way for more and more insane positions that ignore science, public opinion, truth, honesty, and reality.

Rachel has done some interesting pieces on this, tracking the rightward movement of our politicians on the left and right.

so I don't see how they get rid of it. Are they going to outlaw it? They can pull any remaining funding, but that would just hinder it, not shut it down. I have a feeling many would try to help fill the void to see that important services are provided.
