Fortunately, it appears that Duck Dynasty, whatever that is, is water-soluble

Over the last week, I see nothing but posts about this, none of which I have read. Here in Europe, I have heard no mention of it, and have no clue what it is all about, other than a few photos of some ZZ Top wannabes.

Luckily, the whole thing dissolved in the Atlantic, and never made the news here in Europe (at least not in the German or French MSM).

I'm heading for the States in a couple of days. From the looks of things, there will be plenty of opportunity to get deluged by info about it/them (don't know which), if they aren't already yesterday's news by then. I can wait.

it's not news over there. Our ongoing race to the heights of stupidity gets redundant.

manufactured outrage for people to focus on that will be just as silly as this one. It keeps attention away from the real issues.

More reason to believe it was A&E pumping up a viewer base.

Nothing but a mode up controversy designed to fatten the wallets of television executives, while at the same time propagating more hate-talk.

I still don't know what the show is about. I assume "A&E" is some kind of cable channel.

I'm feeling a little out of it, but not necessarily losing out because of it. This really sounds like something not worth spending a lot of time to get educated. If it means I won't be participating in any discussions on the subject, well, I've suffered worse deprivations.

I don't know if the You Tube will work for you to get this...but, gives you the Background of the Show. My USA Internet has been cutting in and out ...so I can't post the depth I'd like to and given the holidays..and such. But, check out and see if you can get an idea about what it is from this.:

https://www.youtube.com/show/duckdynasty

It's a BIG THINg in Many Parts of the USA..and particularly in the Southeast around the Charleston Area with those who identify with the "homespun/radicals" of the Duck Whistle Company.

You won't run into many of them in the circles you run in...but, they are out there. Some of us have "relatives" who sort of sympathize with them and just LOVE that Homespun Comedy of the show. It's possible that the discussion will come up in your meetings over here as "social talk"...and you might want to understand about the controversy just to fit in...down there in Charleston or wherever. Bill Clinton would have understood it all because he grew up in Arkansas amongst some of same folks.

So that's why I'm passing it along to you.

I first saw this on December 31, 1974, and it was old then. I was spending my first holiday week in Germany with my new girlfriend. It was time well-invested, as she is now my wife. Next year we celebrate 40 years together.

"Same procedure as every year...."

I could never drink enough sekt to quite join in with the howls and belly laughs. And I could never stay sober enough to understand the phenomena. In the end it's just been a yearly reminder of the limits to understanding another culture. Or our own, I suppose.

Congrats on your 40th (unless pre-wishing is bad luck).

One or the other of us could always get run over by a truck (my wife very nearly did a few years ago--she crawled out of the wreck, but her car was DOA).

Still, we've beat cancer (her) and a heart attack (me), and figure nothing at this point can take away the good times we've had. We'll just keep on keeping on. There was just a documentary on German TV here on the former chancellor, Helmut Schmidt. Although he was rumored to have had a few affairs, he was married for 68 years. At 40 (and only 32 of them married), we are just beginners by those standards. Schmidt is 95 and still more compos mentis than 95% of today's politicians anywhere. Back when he was in office, Schmidt, whose English is fluent, was on vacation in Florida, and "60 Minutes" did an interview with him. After it aired, they got hundreds of letters asking if it was possible to change the law to permit a German to become President of the United States.

OK, I get the "big country, far from any border" viewpoint of many Americans, and the Republican "we speak English here" bent doesn't help, even if half of them can't even speak or write correctly in English (I'm still waiting for our previous president to explain what "ecolectic" means).

But that's for others to deal with. An America incapable of communicating with the world beyond our borders is an America diminished, both commercially and culturally.

Part of the job requirements of this job I've boxed myself into mandate that I speak and write Spanish, Catalan, Italian, French, Russian, Swedish, Dutch and, of course, German and English. So I can reasonably claim that any fingers pointed for this national deficiency should not be done so at me.
