My DU thread annoyed a conservative to the point where he blogged about it.

Back in November, I posted a thread asking DUers what they do when they enter a business playing FOX News on television.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024080990

So imagine my surprise when I found the thread was a topic of a blog entry on the conservative media site, NewsBusters

The entry was written by the site's founder Matthew Sheffield:

Matthew Sheffield is the creator of NewsBusters and president of Dialog New Media, an internet marketing and design firm. Click here to follow Matthew Sheffield on Twitter.

While normal people are fine with simply ignoring a show they don’t like or just leaving the room, the denizens of Democratic Underground simply cannot stand for that. Instead, thanks to the efforts of a poster named “OmahaBlueDog,” they’ve decided to come up with ways to force their viewpoints on others who either disagree or would rather not talk politics at all.

“How do you handle it when FOX News is playing on TVs in businesses you frequent?” OmahaBlueDog wonders in the subject line before asking what his/her fellow DUers just what they recommend doing when they encounter the world’s second-greatest menace after Bush Family Evil Empire.

“So you walk into a fast food joint, a bar, a hotel, the dry cleaners, the quick lube shop, etc. and there is a TV and it plays FOX news perpetually. How do you handle it? Do you simply ignore it? Do you ask the manager to change the channel? Do you boycott the place?”

The ensuing lengthy discussion is pretty entertaining to read. Here are a few highlights but please be advised of the inevitable profanity.

And there is more than enough evidence to support that watching fox causes a person to be brainwashed and hateful. Not everyone, but a susceptible subset. My personal experience with my Uncle, who went from a good Union man to a rabid union hating retired fool, after watching Fox for many years, is enough for me.

as the unabashed Liberal that I am, my handle was "massliberal" IIRC. They put up with me for some time.

That was when their side was ascendent; now that their side is plummeting into the abyss, they must be a pretty angry bunch.

The example that I like to use is the poll that showed the percentage of viewers who believed that WMDs were found in Iraq.

Some frequent Fox News viewers probably still believe that they found some weapons. They had a lot of trouble letting go at the time (even after Dubya acknowledged it).

Fox News viewers are less informed than people who don't watch any news, according to a new poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

The poll surveyed New Jersey residents about the uprisings in Egypt and the Middle East, and where they get their news sources. The study, which controlled for demographic factors like education and partisanship, found that "people who watch Fox News are 18-points less likely to know that Egyptians overthrew their government" and "6-points less likely to know that Syrians have not yet overthrown their government" compared to those who watch no news.

Overall, 53% of all respondents knew that Egyptians successfully overthrew Hosni Mubarak and 48% knew that Syrians have yet to overthrow their government.

The occasional well placed "fuck" or "shit" can be very effective for adding specific emphasis in an attention getting way. But all too many posts depend on a flood of vulgar references to copulation and excrement that simply divert the imagination away from the point being made.

Perhaps after some back and forth, businesses will start to realize that they aren't in the business of pushing viewpoints or running commercials for other companies and will play scenes of kittens at play or burning yule logs on their fancy big TV screens.

It's the same as when a <insert bagel shop or knitting yarn store or dentist waiting room> plays shock jock radio instead of some lovely Mozart or Haydn.

Nice job getting the discussion going on their side. Republican business owners with tanking businesses or who are losing customers may need to look no further than the TV channel setting in their waiting room.

I like this other guy's blog, because it is certain to backfire. He shouldn't even have brought up the idea that Fox News is customer repellant, even to ridicule it. A whole lot of people probably don't know there is even a business loss issue with Fox News. Now they will evaluate it for themselves.
