Romney wins some states because Gingrich is around taking votes from Santorum, but he also sucks up delegates. Does it benefit Santorum to have Gingrich around because between the two of them they can collect the majority of the delegates?

(108,903 posts)Romney would have actually lost several races were it not for Gingrich.
Gingrich on the other hand gets to re-establish cred. Make more $ on the speaker circuit & get invited on TeeVee like he actually matters - not to mention campaign write offs.

The Florida and Arizona issue still need to be addressed by the way.

(21,925 posts)We'll see in states like Illinois but the perception among GOPers from tonight onward may be that Newt is now irrelevant. Staying in or dropping out might not matter.

(21,925 posts)if Gingrich's votes now go to Santorum, doesn't Santorum pick up those extra delegates and not Romney?

(12,461 posts)Santorum needs Newt out of the race to get all the Anti Romney vote. The anyone but Romney vote. He would put Romney away.

(22,308 posts)There is a big enough anti-Mormon / anti-Romney vote in the Republican party to make sure he can't ever reach 1144. With Newt sucking up part of that it means Santorum can't win outright in a 1-1 with Mitt.
