The significance of Newt staying in

Newt might figure that whether he stays in or drops out it works out the same because his game is denying Romney delegates. (God knows his game can't be winning.)

Since Romney is the second choice of a lot of Newt voters, Newt staying in actually denies Romney more votes than Newt dropping out. Or so Newt might think.

But Newt staying in denies Santorum momentum, meaning more votes for Romney.

And there are several states, including some big ones, that are winner-take-all if any candidate gets 50%. If nobody gets 50% the delegates are awarded proportionally.

In a three-way Romney, Santorum, Paul race I don't know how many states Santorum might get 50% in, but with Newt lingering around there are probably none.

It's a complicated situation, but I think Newt staying in does help Romney even more than it might seem.
