77% Reject Republican Arguments On Birth Control

Americans overwhelmingly regard the debate over President Barack Obama’s policy on employer-provided contraceptive coverage as a matter of women’s health, not religious freedom, rejecting Republicans’ rationale for opposing the rule. More than three-quarters say the topic shouldn’t even be a part of the U.S. political debate.

More than six in 10 respondents to a Bloomberg National Poll -- including almost 70 percent of women -- say the issue involves health care and access to birth control, according to the survey taken March 8-11.

That conflicts with Republican presidential candidates Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney, who say Obama is violating religious freedom by requiring employers -- including those with religious objections to birth control -- to provide a way for women to obtain contraceptive coverage as part of their insurance plans.

The results suggest the Republican candidates’ focus on contraception is out of sync with the U.S. public. Seventy-seven percent of poll respondents say birth control shouldn’t be a topic of the political debate, while 20 percent say it should.

Might have to get up into the 80s before Dems decide that this is a subject they can show "leadership" on. After all, 70+ percent wanted a public option, and look where that went.

were willing to pay for a public option. The results of this poll would probably tank the same way if paying for it was brought up.

yesterday I was at the beauty shop. My hair dresser asked me, as she always does, what is in the political news? She has two teenage daughters and does not watch much news on her tv. I began to talk about Rush and the war on women. She had not heard anything about it. As it turns out the other two hair dressers (both in their late 30s, early 40s) and neither of their clients knew anything about the situation. A little later another client came in - she appeared to be late 70s. She knew all about it and helped me explain the situation to them.

The hair dressers all vote Republican. However, I know that two of them did vote for Obama simply because McCain was too old. They all agreed that the birth control discussion was ridiculous and they feel that personal health care choices are personal. However, I guarantee you that they did not take away from the conversation any real concern about what Republicans are doing. They were dismissive of the entire thing and did not connect it to their voting choices.

I finally suggested that they talk to their daughters about the fight. What can you do about that sort of wilfull ignorance?
