Some bosses can real jerks as reported by CBS Chicago
(CBS) The top executive for a restaurant chain that abruptly fired nearly 20 of its Chicago workers right before the holidays by email has apologized for the insensitive and poorly planned way it was handled.
The workers at Snarfs sub shop, 600 W. Chicago Ave., were notified electronically over the weekend that the restaurant was closing Monday so that it could be renovated and changed into something new. That left 18 employees without jobs, right before Christmas.
In a written statement released Wednesday, Snarfs owner and CEO Jim Seidel says the Colorado-based company will offer the former workers a weeks wages. He said poor business at the River North sandwich shop prompted the company to close the location and reconcept it.
It was insensitive and poorly planned, Seidel said of the firings. We recognize now we acted rashly. For this, we apologize to our employees and to our loyal customers who we know weve disappointed.

(1,945 posts)Eww! Maybe they should start with a name change. "Snarf-er" is the nickname my friend calls her Pug when it makes those wet snuffly/snorting sounds typical of that breed. Not sure I'd want to eat at a place with that name to start with and especially now, knowing how they run their business.

(430 posts)I should confess, i write from Ohio and never heard of the place; but i still believe there is an operating principle involved. A restaurant is to serve food. In a fast food joint, the emphasis is on fast. There is a constant flow of customers, production is wanted now! In any work environment where people are pushed, bosses easily take the mentality of push, bark, and demand. Anyone with that mind is a jerk (way too polite term). To use an analogy, a jockey or a teamster goads his horses to go faster by whipping. In addition the US has both a Calvinistic, Malthusian, capitalist pursuit for mammon/lucre and a contempt of labor/human resources (jargon for human beings); money is greater than people so that the country is becoming a third world despotism with first world wealth.
