After more than 50 years in scouting, Scoutmaster Jim Brass is feeling sick about what his troop is doing.
"Our hearts are broken over having to walk away," he says.
His troop, No. 835 from the Auburn and Pacific area, is leaving Boy Scouts of America because of the national organization's decision to allow openly gay members as of Jan. 1.
Brass tells KOMO Newsradio that the decision was made after months of consideration and was led by the boys and girls in the troop.

This guy is being interviewed on the TeeVee citing 'the safety of the children'; that he must protect his kids by teaching them how to discriminate against those gays. Also, notice the common theme here: "We don't hate any person, but rather are told to love people and hate sin,"

(68,644 posts)Does he think that it's a slippery slope; if a Tacoma troop lets in a gay teen then it'll "infect" his scouts?
This just makes me sad.
Fortunately, he's getting older and will take his hatred to his gay.
Too bad that he's allowed to spread it while he's alive.

(15,384 posts)The kids can leave the troop. Scoutmasters could not return to lead the troop. I suppose the troop could dissolve if there weren't any kids or scoutmasters, but I would think that in the future if that changed, Troop Number XYZ would restart up.

(26,748 posts)The BSA council can always reissue the troop number to another charter... but the troop can certainly leave.
The assets of the troop are in legal limbo. In some documents they are clearly the property of the chartering organization (usually a church), but in at least one case, they are supposed to be held in trust for a new troop at the charter or turned over to the council.

(3,205 posts)That troop is from Pacific, a two-bit, hick, podunk town that even it's neighbors can't find on a map. They only added Auburn to that news article so people would have a general idea where they're at. This story was reported in the local Auburn news paper last week.
My town of Auburn had the good sense to turn back an attempted takeover of the city government by teabaggers last November.
