Gawker: This Chart Shows Why Sunday Talk Shows Suck

<snip>

"Steve Benen of MSNBC figured out all the politicos who've been on serious grownup important Sunday political talk shows more than 10 times in 2013. His colored chart points out that they're nearly all Republicans. But it holds some other angry-making conclusions he didn't highlight.

Benen tallied appearances on "Meet the Press," "Face the Nation," "This Week," "State of the Union," and "Fox News Sunday," concluding that "Sunday shows love Republicans... 10 of the top 13 [guests] are Republicans, as are six of the top seven."

It's a data point, sure. But partisan headcounts mean more to Beltway "WIN THE DAY" scorekeepers than most home viewers. Here are some more telling insights from Benen's chart:

There is precisely one woman on the list, Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), who famously voted against enforcement of equal-pay laws for women because it would place a "lot of additional burdens" on "job creators."

There are no men or women of color on the list, unless you count Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), whose father is Cuban, and who has attacked Democrats as "always willing to play the race card."

Fox will gleefully explain they are closer to 2 to 1 to offer fair and balanced proof. That ignores it should be 1 to 1 and that their host is openly partisan so it ends up being 3 to 1.

When called on this the Networks will explain they are offering the power out of party a chance to promote their views, of course when Republicans are in control they change the story to the party in power is creating the policy so they are newsworthy.

Was Manchin there to talk about energy policy? He's from West Virginia and says what the coal mine owners tell him to say.

Was Schumer there to talk about the Middle East? He's one of those sponsoring legislation aimed at undermining President Obama's peace initiatives. Or was he talking about why we should help Wall Street bankers steal our savings?

Durbin is the majority whip and will say whatever the White House wants him to say, whether it's about foreign policy (where I approve of the President's peace initiative) or health care (on which the President gets a good grade) or about domestic spying or the Trans-Pacific Partnership, where the President doesn't receive such high marks (at least not from me).

It's a bit overt, isn't it? It's pretty much a clear statement to the effect of, "we've purchased this show". Considering the fact that, as you mentioned, they don't sell consumer products and don't advertise direct to the consumer anywhere else on television, it's almost ludicrously transparent.

I use to read Benen everyday when he was at the POlitical Animal blog.. he was always bringing up McCain's overkill on Sunday. "If it's Sunday it must be John McCain on gasbag shows." Or something like that.

This should be plastered all over the net! In fact I'm going to put it on my FB page.

1. Repeat Republican talking points as truth ad nauseum (i.e. Obamacare, Benghazi, etc.).
2. Take a push poll regarding Republican talking point.
3. Discuss President's bad poll numbers based on news media's poor reporting and Republican lies.

1. Take a poll asking a broad and vague question like "Is the country headed in the right direction?". Not a specific question about a certain policy mind you, just any question guaranteed to generate a negative response.
2. Ask Democratic guest why they going against the grain when America is rejecting liberalism and Democratic/Presidential policies as if that's what poll respondents were saying when in fact they may having been indicating policies are not liberal enough. (This was done over and over again with Obamacare. Ask people if they are happy with Obamacare then count people who want a public option or single payer with the knuckle dragging mouth breathers who want no reform at at all.)

1. Hold Democrats responsible for Republican obstructionism. (If Republican version of compromise is Democrat complete surrender then Democrats should surrender completely or be accused of not comprising).

1. Have no standard what so ever regarding accuracy of pundit policy positions. You can have a track record of outstandingly bad policy predictions such as the Iraq War and never ever be called on it.

1. False equivalency. No matter how inappropriate compare minor bureaucratic mishaps to major f*ck ups that cost thousands of lives by continually trying to inject phrases like "mission accomplished" and "Katrina moment" into events that have nothing more in common than they happened on planet Earth. (Why not just refer to Ed Wood's "Plan 9 from Outer Space" as his "Citizen Kane" moment?)
