Berlin (AFP) - The US National Security Agency has collected sensitive data on key telecommunications cables between Europe, north Africa and Asia, German news magazine Der Spiegel reported Sunday citing classified documents.
Spiegel quoted NSA papers dating from February and labelled "top secret" and "not for foreigners" describing the agency's success in spying on the so-called Sea-Me-We 4 undersea cable system.
The massive bundle of fibre optic cables originates near the southern French city of Marseille and links Europe with north Africa and the Gulf states, continuing through Pakistan and India to Malaysia and Thailand.
"Among the companies that hold ownership stakes in it are France Telecom, now known as Orange and still partly government-owned, and Telecom Italia Sparkle," Spiegel said.

(3,891 posts)I and others told the DU users about Project Ivy Bells. Others mentioned the program from the 1960's, and many here told us that it was impossible to do so with Fiber Optic cables, and that we were just spreading CT FUD.
I seem to remember several, but here is one I have bookmarked. http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023294768
Well, since the Conspiracy Theory Fear Uncertainty and Doubt defense is gone, one has to wonder what will be next?
Judging from the decision on the NSA suit brought by the ACLU, the answer would be we didn't have a right to know about the programs run by our Government, and since we didn't have a right to know, we don't have a right to be upset or angry.
That and it's old news, everybody knows this is going on, and we have since the 1960's.
