Cracks starting to show in support for Indiana gay marriage ban

Cracks are beginning to surface in legislative support for an Indiana constitutional ban on gay marriage. At least three lawmakers who voted for the proposal three years ago have reversed their positions.

Several other lawmakers are re-considering their support amid quickly shifting public opinion and growing pressure from a broad coalition of ban opponents.

But it would take a seismic shift in lawmakers' opinions to defeat the ban this year and prevent it from going to voters for a November referendum. And conservative groups supporting the ban already are taking out ads to publicly pummel those who change their minds.

... Political scientists have said the silence reflects the emotional contentiousness of the issue and quickly shifting public opinion.
