(27,315 posts)In addition, many minimum wage workers have a good education in this lousy economy. They just cannot find a job that is commensurate with their education.
One of the biggest lie with the American Dream and this education promise is that everybody will have what was considered a good job. Jobs do not grow on trees. We will still need people to do service jobs. So, rather than telling people to get more education and a better job, it is time to tell loud and clear that service jobs are GOOD JOBS that should be paid accordingly. We need these people. They make our life better.

(11,101 posts)I wish they would just be honest. That's the only economic reality they care about. Yet they always argue that the minimum wage costs jobs. Never mind that raising the minimum wage has NEVER lead to higher unemployment. It's an argument that "sounds logical" even if it's unsupported, and it certainly sounds better than "Low wages make us rich, end of discussion".

(5,171 posts)small businesses more than large businesses (like Walmart) because of 'economies of scale', and yet it's the large businesses that pay the least. Raising minimum wage raises the playing field, but it doesn't tilt it.
It becomes an economic choice, pay a little more for products, or pay more taxes out of a shrunken wage base, to support more underpaid workers. Less money also goes to social security and medicare out of a smaller wage base also.

(11,101 posts)you know all those previous times when the minimum was raised, and despite the same dire predictions, it did not cause unemployment. The minimum wage in 1968 in today's dollars was about $9.45. The unemployment rate was 3.7% It's simply amazing that supply-siders can be utterly wrong about everything for the last 50 years, yet they still get to spout off about economics.

(9,350 posts)Her argument gives us another example of what someone needs to believe to be a Republican. We should not increase the minimum wage because people should try to get better educations. However, we should cuts all funds that would give people the money to fund their educations.
