Morrissey: Eating meat is the same as paedophilia

Eating meat is not murder, it's much worse than that, according to the celebrated miserablist and former Smiths singer Morrissey.

"I see no difference between eating animals and paedophilia," he said. "They are both rape, violence, murder. If I'm introduced to anyone who eats beings, I walk away."

.......

"Imagine, for example, if you were in a nightclub and someone said to you: 'Hello, I enjoy bloodshed, throat-slitting and the destruction of life,' well, I doubt if you'd want to exchange phone numbers," he said.

The insights were shared in a Q&A session on his fan website, True to You. Asked about his proudest achievement, he said it was persuading many people to stop eating meat. "If you believe in the abattoir then you would support Auschwitz. There's no difference."

But he wasn't done: "If Jamie 'Orrible is so certain that flesh-food is tasty then why doesn't he stick one of his children in a microwave?" he asked. And of Cilla Black preparing a leg of lamb recently on television: "Since a lamb is a baby, I wondered what kind of mind Cilla Black could possibly have that would convince her that eating a baby is OK?"

Vegetarianism isn't for everybody and vegetarians on a moral crusade suck just like any other zealot.

Most of my meals are plant based, I just feel better that way. I know meat eaters who tried to go vegetarian and ended up feeling sick all the time. One size does not fit all.

how exactly is eating meat like being a pedophile? I get how someone might claim that eating meat is just like being a cannibal (not that I would agree). But eating meat is like having sex with a child? What makes it more like having sex with a child than having sex with an adult?

Maybe you can help out the rest of us who think Morrissey's comparison makes no sense.

He means they are morally wrong to the same degree. That's how I read it.

Eating meat *is* eating "beings" who have, by and large, been mistreated, tortured, and killed in various horrible ways. I once saw some industrial chicken coops (just from the outside!) and subsequently have avoided the non-organic chicken, but to be honest I barely eat meat anymore and feel pretty conflicted about eating 'beings'. Why should I cause the suffering of another creature? On the other hand, bacon is delicious. I think in an ideal world we'd all personally kill any animals we eat (props to the hunters who eat their quarry), so that we have the courage of our convictions, but as it stands most of us outsource the killing to the meat industry so we can see meat as just something we buy in the store, rather than part of a dead creature. I saw some ribs at the grocery store today and all I could think was how gruesome that is. I can't contemplate killing an animal, so I feel I don't then have a right to eat animals either.

I refuse to eat that chemical/steroid filled store bought meat or eggs, we raise our own chickens, hunt all of our meat, grow our own veggies, we're pretty much self sufficient.

I have thought about raising chickens.. can't do it in my current neighborhood (I think) but long-term I plan to move and do that too. Not sure I see myself hunting, only out of emotional inability to kill an animal - intellectually I think it's totally fine if you do it yourself and eat it yourself, so kudos to you!

Perhaps his comparison is not as crazy as it first appears, when you think of it as both being equally reprehensible. Obviously Morrissey considers it as bad as pedophilia since he considers meat murder.

Being a pedophile isn't the same thing as enjoying a cheeseburger. This idiot should just crawl back into obscurity.
