Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz in a statement Wednesday accused New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) of exacting political retribution on a Democratic mayor who didn't endorse his re-election bid.
After documents obtained by several news outlets connected one of Christie's closest aides to lane closures on the George Washington Bridge that caused traffic mayhem in Fort Lee, N.J., Mayor Mark Sokolich told the Wall Street Journal that he had been the victim of "political payback."
Christie repeatedly denied he was involved in the closures, which Schultz said was "clearly untrue given the discovery of emails that came directly from his own top staff."
Read Schultz's full statement below:
The latest news in Chris Christies bridge scandal indicates political retribution and raises a host of new questions. What is crystal clear is that the Governors office ordered lane closures that were intended to make first responders experience delays, kids sit gridlocked on the first day of school, and commuters hit log jams, to punish the Democratic mayor who didnt endorse Chris Christie's reelection bid.
These revelations are troubling for any public official, but they also indicate what weve come to expect from Governor Christie when people oppose him, he exacts retribution. When people question him, he belittles and snidely jokes. And when anyone dares to look into his Administration, he bullies and attacks.
For 121 days, Chris Christie disparaged the questioners and later lied saying no one in his office was involved. That was clearly untrue given the discovery of emails that came directly from his own top staff. Times up, Governor.

(35,392 posts)Repugs/Cons always say it's the guy at the top who's responsible for everybody under him.
That is, when it's Obama "at the top".
When it's a Repug/Con/TBagger ... it's Obama's fault.

(53,661 posts)I even found a 'Patriot' site in my search that shows Christie carrying Obama in his arms after their wedding. They said Christie was a secret weapon to get Obama re-elected in 2012.
Strange stuff. And for a brief moment in time, it was a good thing that some love was shared - for the people of New Jersey.
Yes, it's always Obama's fault.

(856 posts)Barbara Buono was an excellent candidate who exposed the real Christie!!! I was so disappointed how the Democratic Party completely ignored her. I am glad to read that Debbie Wasserman Shultz did campaigned for her. I do not live in NJ but I would have been proud to vote for State Senator Buono!!!

(2,640 posts)I don't live in Jersey, so I didn't follow the election as it was happening, and was pissed at the Dems for not supporting her. But I went back and watched debate and campaign videos after the fact, and after seeing some of the stuff, I barely would have supported her. She got completely destroyed in the debate I saw for example.
