On the second day of the lane closures, at 8:04 am, Sokolich sent a text to Baroni. "Presently we have four very busy traffic lanes merging into only one toll booth. ... The bigger problem is getting kids to school. Help please. It's maddening."
Seeing that text, a person whose name has been redacted from the e-mails and text messages writes to Wildstein: "Is it wrong that I am smiling?"
"No," Wildstein responds.
"I feel badly about the kids," the unknown person writes.
"I guess," he or she adds a minute later.
Responds Wildstein: "They are the children of Buono voters."

...In the documents, obtained by The New York Times and other news outlets Wednesday, Bridget Anne Kelly, a deputy chief of staff in Mr. Christies office, gave a signal to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to close the lanes about two weeks before the closings occurred.
Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee, she emailed David Wildstein, Mr. Christies close friend from high school, and one of his appointees at the Port Authority, which controls the bridge. Mr. Christie and some officials at Port Authority have said the closings were done as part of a traffic study, but they caused havoc for days, backing up traffic for hours.
After the emails were released, Mr. Christie canceled his one public event for the day, which had been billed as an announcement of progress in the recovery from Hurricane Sandy. His office had no immediate comment.
Mr. Christies handpicked chairman of the Port Authority, David Samson, was also involved in the closings, according to the emails, which describe his efforts to retaliate against New York officials who had not been told of the changes and sought to ease the gridlock.

(18,290 posts)As far as the particular text excerpts referred to in my OP (pages 9 and 10 of the provided documents), it seems highly unlikely that it was Kelly whom Wildstein was texting. In other emails and texts, Kelly's name is clearly identified and not redacted at all, so why would her name be blacked-out in some portions of the documents but not others?
There's someone else who the Port Authority is protecting with its redactions, and the NYTimes apparently erred when it attributed the above text correspondence as being between Wildstein and Kelly.

(14,040 posts)Is it wrong that I am smiling? Mr. Wildstein texted Ms. Kelly.
No, she texted back.
I feel badly about the kids, he texted.
They are the children of Buono voters, she said, referring to Mr. Christies Democratic opponent, Barbara Buono, who was trailing consistently in the polls and lost by a wide margin.
Ms. Kelly is one of three deputy chiefs of staff in Mr. Christies office, and a close member of his team. Her Twitter timeline included a photograph, before it was taken down Wednesday morning, of her celebrating her 40th birthday last year with the governor and other members of his staff.

The emails contradict repeated statements by Christie that neither his staff nor anyone from his campaign was involved with the lane closures.
