Problem cannabis use is genetic: study

Problem cannabis use is overwhelmingly the result of genes rather than upbringing or lifestyle, a new twin study carried out by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health has concluded.

The study of 1,791 twins from the US state of Virginia found that genetic factors accounted for roughly 79 percent of problem cannabis use, compared to just 54 percent for cocaine.

The shared environment in which those surveyed grew up -- which accounted for as much of 16 percent of cocaine abuse -- seemed to have no bearing at all on the likelihood of someone developing problems with cannabis.

"The factors that explain why some get addicted and others don't are hereditable," the study's author Eivind Ystrøm told The Local. "There's not a single cannabis gene, but if both your parents were cannabis abusers, you would be more likely to have a large number of genes which put you at risk."

Ystrøm said that while at present there was no way to test for vulnerability, he believed those whose relatives have problems with cannabis should be wary of trying the drug.

problem cannabis use? There was no definition. I realize that just because I've never met anyone that was addicted to pot, stole shit to sell so they could by pot, was reduced to a quivering mass of sweaty flesh during pot withdrawal that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Maybe the percentage is higher with pot than coke cuz pot isn't scary like coke can be to some folks?

7. Looks like more hysterical horseshit from the drug warriors

There is no physical dependency on pot. Stopping suddenly will only result in the unhappiness one gets when some foodstuff runs out and a trip to the store isn't possible. There are no physical effects from stopping even heavy use suddenly.

People do self medicate with it and it works. Those people will be really unhappy if it is withdrawn and nothing else is prescribed.

However, no tolerance is built up even over a long period. There is no physical withdrawal.

While pot isn't a panacea by any means, more rubbish like this article, which doesn't define its terms at all, should be taken with a pound of salt.
