The editorial page of the largest newspaper in New Jersey has some serious doubts that Gov. Chris Christie (R) only learned this week that a close aide signed off on lane closures that caused paralysis on the George Washington Bridge last summer.
The governor's claim, wrote the editorial board of The Star-Ledger on Thursday, "stretches the bounds of belief."
When his appointees at the Port Authority resigned, did he really not ask why? And was he not curious enough to inquire about the content of the emails being handed over in these subpoenas? Did he really just wait to read about it all in the papers?
The Star-Ledger, which begrudgingly endorsed Christie for re-election last year, published another tough editorial earlier this week, questioning whether the presumed presidential candidate can be trusted "as a potential future leader of our country."
Another Garden State paper, The Bergen Record, argued Thursday that the lane closures on the bridge warrant a criminal investigation.

(31,879 posts)They did not endorse him begrudgingly . . . they did it with glee. It's the same day I cancelled my subscription prior to picking up the phone and making calls for Buono.
I don't disagree with them on this - but they endorsed him with glee.

(904 posts)...it's because people confuse authoritarianism and despotism with leadership.
This isn't new for New Jersey, BTW. And it isn't exclusive to Republicans - look into the shenanigans promulgated by George Norcross III and his minions.

(10,597 posts)He has absolutely no credibility. Actually, he, personally, is in the minus range of credibility. Had I been the governor of that state, I would have hopped on that lane-closer business on the GWB on day one. It was blatant political retribution against someone, if not several someones. Like "killing 2 or more birds with one stone", so-to-speak. Proof? Where's the "traffic study?"

(129,442 posts)And there's your problem right there. Despite his pattern of bullying, with plenty of video footage as proof, the papers endorsed him anyway. And that includes my hometown paper, the Phila. Inquirer.
Maybe they are eating crow? Or better, they don't care either way and are in a feeding frenzy.

(904 posts)If he's telling the truth, he's an idiot and incompetent for leadership of the dog catching department.
If he's lying, well then, he's lying - and is still unfit for office.

...something about this story stinks. The motive (revenge against a mayor) doesn't add up.
It Doesn't Fit
<...>
There is one theory that makes sense of most of the evidence. Perhaps this really did start as the harebrained idea of just a few people - Wildstein, Baroni, Kelly et al. - and then the bigger players only came in once they realized what was happening and saw the danger it posed to Christie.
Maybe.
At the moment, that's the most plausible explanation. But it really doesn't add up. There's some as yet unseen factor at work here that makes sense of all this. But I don't think we know yet what it is.

There is no way Christie didn't know, and it's not feasible that Kelly initiated this. Something is missing.
On Rachel Maddow's show tonight, it's clear that John Wisniewski is not buying Christie's BS.

(45,251 posts)I imagine that there are many ways that Christie could retaliate against the Star Ledger, including giving "scoops" to rivals, so this took courage.

(7,403 posts)But these are only the documents coming from a single source. Will Christie attempt to exert executive privilege to keep the documents Kelly has under wraps because to do so would bring charges of what is Christie hiding. Also, there could be challenges to some of the redacting on the documents already released. This is a long ways from being over. A long ways.
