High School Baseball Coach Says Christie, Wildstein Did In Fact Travel In The Same Circles

High School Baseball Coach Says Christie, Wildstein Did In Fact Travel In The Same Circles

During his epic press conference last week, Gov. Chris Christie's (R) repeated insistence that he barely knows Port Authority official David Wildstein stood out.

The New Jersey governor made it a point to say that, contrary to media reports and despite the fact that they attended the same high school, he and Wildstein were "not friends."

"We didn't travel in the same circles in high school. You know, I was the class president and athlete. I don't know what David was doing during that period of time," Christie said.

But The New Republic's Alec MacGillis revealed Friday that Christie and Wildstein weren't exactly worlds apart. MacGillis caught up with Tony Hope, the former baseball coach at Livingston High School, who recalled that Christie was the team's catcher while Wildstein served as "our baseball statistician."

Edited to add background on Wildstein:

Ex-blogger is Governor Christie's eyes, ears inside the Port Authority

For a decade, he was a faceless force in New Jersey politics, an Internet blogger who delivered scoops while keeping his identity a closely guarded secret...David Wildstein, formerly known by the pen name Wally Edge, is playing a key behind-the-scenes role in Governor Christie’s effort to get more control over the Port Authority...in Wildstein, an experienced political strategist who went to high school with the governor, the Christie administration may have found the perfect instrument to help shake things up, some say.

Longtime employees, however, privately describe a man intent on carrying out a political agenda rather than one built on reform or improving the region’s transportation system. They believe the appointment of Wildstein and dozens of others recommended by the governor — for jobs ranging from toll collector to deputy executive director — are evidence that political loyalty trumps merit.

To Christie, though, they are needed to bring about change. And Wildstein figures prominently in that effort.

“He is there in that job because he is well suited to the task of playing a role in reforming the Port Authority in accordance with the governor’s goals,” said Christie’s spokesman, Michael Drewniak.

<...>

Wally Edge, the anonymous, acerbic and influential editor of the website PolitickerNJ, is really former Livingston Mayor David Wildstein, according to four people with personal knowledge of Edge’s identity.

Wildstein has left the site unofficially to start his new job as director of interstate capital projects at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. In his new position, which pays $215,000 a year, Wildstein is working under his own name.

He was hired by former Mercer County Republican Sen. Bill Baroni, now the No. 2 executive at the agency. Gov. Chris Christie’s office did not object to the hire...In an e-mail to The Star-Ledger late Thursday, Wally Edge said goodbye.

"After more than 10 years covering New Jersey politics, it’s time for me to retire," he wrote. "Founding PolitickerNJ.com has been a tremendous journey, spanning six governors and seven statewide elections. New Jersey has an amazing political history, many talented (political) operatives, and a huge number of very good people."

A regular tell it all guy......sure was quiet on the stand. !!

Various reports have described Wildstein as a childhood friend of Christie’s. According to Shawn Boburg, a reporter for the Record who profiled Wildstein in 2012, “he was known as the governor’s eyes and ears inside” the Port Authority. Christie was at pains to deny this. “David and I were not friends in high school,” he said. “I was class president and an athlete. I don’t know what David was doing at that time.” After Wildstein joined the Port Authority, Christie conceded, he may have run into him five or six times, but he said he didn’t recall meeting with him in his office.

Really funny when you make a political appointment not to know the person, seriously it politics you know who you appoint. Wildstein was Chrisites man at the PA, his inside connection.

If he's making such a big deal that they weren't friends, I guarantee you there are pictures of them sitting next to each other in team pictures or goofing around together in the hall.

Wonder if the town library keeps them. I go to that library, so I'll check next time I am there. I was just there a couple days ago and saw some books I wanted to check out but they were behind glass doors. I asked on the way out, though, and they said I could ask for them.

If not, perhaps the librarian can tell me who to contact at the school. They probably have one copy of each yearbook going way back.
